Sally Lockhart makes an unusual hero, left alone at the age of 16 when her father dies, she makes her way through turn of the century London and survives on her wits, as there was precious little else left to her. Still she prevails and forms her own business as the only female financial consultant in London.

When one of Sally's clients loses a large sum of money in the unexpected collapse of a British shipping firm, Sally sets out to investigate. But as she delves deeper into the identity of a wealthy and elusive industrialist, she uncovers a plot so diabolical, it could subvert the entire civilized world.

I have no idea why the Sally Lockhart mysteries (four in all) are classified as for young readers. The plots and themes all seem very 'grown-up' to me.

I thoroughly enjoyed all four books in this series, especially the first three of which are based in Victorian London.

Quite a tour de force; an adventurous tale with lots of twists and turns and richly complex characters. Highly recommended.

The year is 1878. The leading character Sally Lockhart returns, four years older, as a twenty-two year old young lady. She has gone into business for herself as a financial consultant. Investigating the case of one of her clients having lost money in a potentially fraudulent company, she discovers a diabolical plot that exceeds far beyond a simple finacial matter.

Once again, her friends and associates (first encountered in the first book in the series) assist Sally as she investigates this dangerous business.
