This is a very family-friendly book that I enjoyed reading. It is not a mystery but rather a story of a small town and the folks who live there. Charming.

This is the 8th novel in the best-selling Mitford Years series. I loved every one of these books, but this is special because it is a Christmas story. When I finished the series I was sad to leave these friends behind. Write more, Jan Karon!!!

The eighth book in the Mitford Series. This is another one of Jan Karon's excellent books. When I read these books, I want to live in Mitford. In this book Father Tim is trying to repair an old nativity scene for his wife, Cynthia, for Christmas.

Beautiful gift copy!
Since he was a boy growing up in Mississippi, Father Tim has lived what he calls "the life of the mind." Except for cooking and gardening and washing his dog, he never learned to savor the work of his hands. And then he finds a derelict nativity scene-twenty figures, at Andrews antique shop including a flock of sheep, Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus, the Wise men and Shepherds and many others that have suffered the indignities of time and neglect. Could he give the small company new life? Restore the camel's ear, repaint every piece, replace a missing nose on a wise man? "You can't teach an old dog new tricks!" he reminds himself. It's when he imagines the excitement in Cynthia's eyes that he steps up to the plate-and begins a small journey of faith that touches everyone around him.

This is a beautiful Christmas story about the whole town. All your Favorite characters are back Father Tim, Cynthia, Dooley, Velma, JC, Uncle Billy, Lew Boyd, Andrew, Mule and Hope.

First time I visited Mitford, and I'm going BaCk!! I was looking for a good read for the CHistmas Spirit Season. The Title caught my eye and the excerpt about the story of rescuing a creche. Finding that it was the 8th book was hard on my OC which manages my "must read the series from the beginning," but championing that I read it anyway, knowing I wouldn't be able to read the series that quickly. I was pleasantly surprised that the book was able to stand very well on it's own. Also for those of different religions, than the Main Character Father Tim, but are of the same faith in Jesus Christ; This story was WONDERFUL! Don't let religious affiliations stop you from enjoying this wonderful and thoughtful book!! I'm looking forward to going back and enjoying the rest.

The eighth novel in the Mitford Yeas series. It seeks to restore the true Christmas spirit and give everyone a seat at Mitford's holiday table

I enjoyed the book, but felt it isn't as good as the prior books in the series. Story line a bit weak and too limited in the time period covered - only the Christmas season. But an easy lightweight read, and reader keeps up with those endearing characters!
