One of Smith's best efforts. You won't have to chew on this one to read it. Al Trimm

I had read this book as a teen and wanted to read it again. To be clear, it IS classic old style Wilbur Smith. It also carries with it the classic old Wilbur Smith racism. I didn't remember his writing that way until reading The Sunbird. I had to put it down, I found it so offensive.

From the dramatic whirlpool of Africa, big game hunts, terrorism and intrigue, the protagonists of an urgent modern adventure are swept back in time, through the battle, romance and tragedy of their pasts in the savage epoch of Carthage.

This guy is one of my favorite authors, if not THE favorite. This book is one of his best. Exciting adventure that involves looking for a lost city. I would recommend reading ALL of Wilbur Smiths books, not just this one.

From the Publisher
Dr. Ben Kazin is a brilliant acrheologist. Louren Sturvesant is rich, impulsive, and physically imposing, everything Ben is not. Now, the to men--friends, competitors and partner--are searching for the legendary lost city of Opet, built by an Egyptian culture that reached Africa two thousand years ago, then vanished completely.

For Ben, the expedition is a chance to prove a controversial thesis. For Louren, it is a chance to spend milions--and make it all back in gold and glory. But what awaits them is an astounding discovery, a seige of terror, and an act of betrayal that will tear the two men apart and bind them together forever...

Hidden beneath water, jungle, and blood-red cliffs is a lost world where two men and a beautiful woman were caught in a furious battle of passions two thousands years ago, but which has begun once again....

A present day archaelogical discovery in Africa of a long-lost city triggers a present day clash between people and cultures. The tale of the people and history of the ruins is also told, interwoven in a story of modern passions as well as the previous life of the same characters from centuries in the past. Vivid writing and very well done with the author's usual expertise and intimate knowledge of Africa.
