If you have ever read Lorna Landvik, you love her. If you haven't, this is a good place to start.
A group of somewhat offbeat people in a small town form a loose family around a diner that features the best coffee in the world. Summer visitors dream about it until their next visit, but the locals get their fix every morning. Life in good, until the movie producer finds his next star sitting at the counter.
Ms. Landvik's characters are grounded in the tall pine country of the North midwest, but they are real. Imagine Paula Dean running the coffeeshop.
This is one of her better books, but then, all of her are good. I enjoy spending time with these people.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Lorna Landvik books...............this is just another excellent story to let yourself disappear into. I hated to see it end!
Didn't like as much as _Angry Housewives_ or Patty Jane's House of Curl_ by the same author. While the characters are enjoyable, they are a little too quirky and "Lake Woebegone-ish" for my taste. The other two books touched me because I felt like the characters were real. The inhabitants of Tall Pine are too folksy and touch base with reality too seldom. (Maybe Minnesotans are really like that, but this Texan couldn't relate.) Both the other two books are set in Minnesota but for the most part are more universal in their appeal.
One of Landvik's best. You have to love these characters!
Excellent, excellent, excellent! Tall Pine Polka is a fun read. If you enjoy Fannie Flagg's writing, you will enjoy this book!
It took me a little while to really become absorbed into this story. This is probably because there are so many characters, and each one has such a finely detailed personality. Once I got hooked, I couldn't put the book down! If you like Lorna Landvik, this is typically one of her stories. The characters are more than quirky! As the book was drawing to a close, I found myself sorry to say good-bye to the whole gang at the Cup O'Delight! They became my "good friends". The book is a delight!
Quirky characters are a hallmark of Landvik's writing and this is no exception. An enjoyable trip to Minnesota that blends comedy and drama.
Not my favorite by this author. I really loved Patti Jane's House of Curl!
The story revolve round a group of lively coffee-lovers in a small town, the Tall Pine.
i love lorna landvik. this was one of her best!
From back of book-
In the small town of Tall Pine, MN, at the Cup O'Delight Cafe, the townsfolk gather for what they call the Tall Pine Polka, an event in which heavenly coffee, good food, and that feeling of being alive among friends inspires both body and soul to dance.
In the small town of Tall Pine, Minnesota, at the Cup O'Delight Cafe, the townsfolk gather for what they call the Tall Pine Polka, an event in which heavenly coffee, good food, and that feeling of being alive among friends inspires both body and soul to dance. There's the cafe owner, the robust and beautiful Lee O'Leary, who escaped to the northwoods from an abusive husband; Miss Penk and Frau Katt, the town's only lesbian couple; Pete, proprietor of the Shoe Shack, who spends nights crafting beautiful shoes to present to Lee, along with his declarations love; Mary, whose bad poetry can clear out the cafe in seconds flat; and, most important of all, Lee's best friend, Fenny Ness, a smart and sassy twenty-two-year-old going on eighty. When Hollywood rolls into Tall Pine to shoot a movie and a handsome musician known as Big Bill appears on the scene, Lee and Fenny find their friendship put to the test, as events push their hearts in unexplored directions---where endings can turn into new beginnings...
Her books are awesome! If you haven't read a book by Lorna Landvik...do so today.
Colorful characters in small town Minnesota and their intertwined lives. I liked this book!
This could be southern lit for the characters, except that it takes place in Minnesota! Loved it!!!
Characters and situations that get inside you and stick. Landvick weaves unique, unforgettable tales. Excellent!
Another book by the author of Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons.Lorna Landvik writes about the town of Tall Pine, Minnesota and the changes that take place when a Hollywood production company rolls into town to make a movie.
The Cup O'Delight Cafe HAS to be a cousin to The Whistle Stop Cafe - I know it does!
Slow starting but very good read.
Lorna Landvik is one of my favorite authors.....and this was one of my favorite books.
A hilarious romp in Tall Pine, Minnesota, when a movie crew rolls into town.
