From the cover: What would you do if you were mistaken for a Nazi spy? It began so innocently. A holiday visit to Poland. But before enjoying the sights and sounds of this fascinating new place, happiness took a violent turn and became a nightmare of terror. . . when you're mistaken for a Nazi spy, to save your life you have to prove you are innocent.

While a bit long, compared to many of today's thrillers. MacInnes novel of the early days of World War II in Poland is exceptional. It follows a young English woman who visits Poland to see if she is really in love with a member of the Polish minor aristocracy who visited her family on England.

She delays leaving the country until it is too late and finds herself helping the Poles in their battle. She is also introduced into the complexities of spying, teaching her the lessons of trust and duplicity.

Many of today's novelists could take lessons from MacInnes and how she weaves her plots and develops her characters.

In MacInnes' inimitable style, a mistaken identity thriller that takes place during WWII.
