I am illegitimate. But this was never a problem for me--it was just me and my mother against the world. Mother never told me much about her past, and after a couple of unanswered questions in childhood, I stopped asking. Now, Mother is sick, and she's decided to revisit the past--literally--by taking an unexpected trip to the mountains where she was born.

I was worried; I was scared. I followed her. And my mother's journey became my journey, too. I discovered that I have a father--and my parents are still in love. Their life together just took a detour that lasted over forty years.

Their relationship was like a blackberry winter...the colder the weather, the sweeter the berries in spring. And now that I've found the truth, will I have the strength to make it through my own blackberry winter?

There are clues near the end of each book to help you with some of the more difficult puzzles. These give a hint without telling you the answer and spoiling the fun. There are, of course, answers to all the puzzles at the end of the book.

1845.
The flickering lamps cast an eerie light on the faces of the men at the graveside. Luke stood with his head bowed beside the coffin of his friend John Torrington. Just nine months before, crowds had cheered as the men of Sir John Franklin's Arctic expedition sailed from England. But now their two ships were trapped in a dark, freezing world. Luke was beginning to wonder if he would ever see his home again.

1984.
"It's as if he's just unconscious," whispered Owen Beattie. The anthropologis gazed in awe at the perfectly preserved body of John Torrington. Nearly 140 years ago this young sailor had been part of the greatest expedition ever sent in search of the Northwest Passage. Could his lonely grave help to unravel the mystery of why two ships and 129 brave sailors vanished into the bitter cold of the long Arctic night?
