Black Elk Speaks: Being the Life Story of a Holy Man of the Oglala Sioux
Review Date: 1/9/2009
Helpful Score: 3

I've never read a more interesting Native American book. Black Elk was right there in the middle of history with Wounded Knee and Custer and Crazy Horse! What a fascinating read from an eye witness to events we all learn about in elementary school. What a sad commentary on the treatment of a conquering race to a native population.

This book would be an excellent addition to any study program of Native Americans or History of the American West. Anyone who enjoys reading about Native American culture and ceremonies would also enjoy this book.

A good read. If you are really into classic rock and love music trivia, you'll love the background. The mystery story is okay, if just a little predictable. I should say the culprit is a little predictable, but not the motive. I liked it enough to seek out some of his other works.

A really nice YA story about three Scottish children who summer in France near their grandparents' farm. There is a closed up house in the neighborhood where the children have always enjoyed playing in the garden full of big sunflowers. Several different events happen that lead the children to believe that there is a mystery surrounding the house and somehow it involves their family.

There is a good subtext about prejudice in the story - how prejudices are formed and how they hurt both those who harbor prejudice and those they hold them against.

Very nice story, good characters of different ages (three siblings) that readers can identify with and good writing.

Treks Not Taken: What if Stephen King, Anne Rice, Kurt Vonnegut, and Other Literary Greats Had Written Episodes of Star Trek : The Next Generation?
Review Date: 12/27/2007

The stories in this collection are a mixed bag. One or two had me chuckling out loud, a couple were clever enough to make me smile, the rest were just boring. I was quite disappointed. I think the author did a pretty fair job writing in the style of some of the world's literary giants, but maybe too good a job. If you don't like Anne Rice when she writes her own stuff, you probably won't like her style even when the setting and characters are those you love. If you are a big ST fan you will probably want to at least read this to say you did. If you are a die-hard fan, you will probably want to add this to your collection for the sake of collecting, not necessarily because it's a great book.

I finally finished the book. I won't say it was the most wonderful book I ever read, but I can say that it was 'good' - not great, but good. There were so many good parts separated by so many boring parts! I think this book could easily have been 200 pages shorter and be a much better read.

After slogging through the first 150 pages very slowly, it finally got very interesting at about page 250. The whole middle was quite good, then during the story of the Long War, it got boring again. Then the last section got interesting again.

This is not a book I would recommend to anyone in general. If you are really into reincarnation stories and have a lot of patience, go for it. If you have ANY kind of vision problems at all, get the hardback, or LP versions. The MMPB type is *really* tiny, IMO.
