I haven't checked the time estimates, but there are some really cute patterns in here. Tank tops, sweaters, shawls, hats, scarves, bags, throws. Some cute uses of fake fur (although there are some less cute, more dated ones as well). A nice range of gift options, fun to fancy.

Bertrand Russell, Nobel Prize winning philosopher and scientist, offers a basic understanding of the structure of the universe in this explanation of relativity. Using direct and simple language and taking analogies drawn from everyday experience, he shows how the theory of relativity has changed the course of science and the future of mankind.

A great selection of short stories, from one belonging with the Abhorsen series to a very serious story of children stuck in war to a completely silly "choose-your-own-adventure".

In this, the first collection of Holmes's stories, the detective uses his uncanny skills to rescue a king from blackmail, to capture an ingenious bank robber, and to save an innocent son accused of parricide... Confronted with cases that either seem obvious or hopelessly obscure, Holmes uses his encyclopedic knowledge and preternatural powers of deduction to unearth the truth.

Short stores of human and alien interactions. Includes a story from Sector General (Countercharm, in which Star Surgeon Conway had to share his brain with an alien medic - and the alien was taking over) and a prequel to the hospital's creation (Tableau - The Orligs were cute, cuddly teddy bears who wanted to destroy humanity. How could MacEwan and Grulyaw-Ki come to an understanding and stop the Earth-Orlig war?)

Fourth book in the Sector General series.

There was a lot of talk about the vital importance of his new assignment, but it still seemed like a demotion to Senior Physician Conway. He couldn't quite appreciate the "honor" of becoming an ambulance attendant at this stage of his life.

True, the insectile empath Dr. Prilicla would be with him, and so would the eminently desirable Pathologist Murchison, but it was definitely a comedown for a Senior Physician to be conscripted as part of a first aid team for disabled spacefarers.

Or so he thought - and then the fist call came...

Gustavo Arellano, born in Anaheim, CA, to a tomato canner and an illegal immigrant, is now a staff writer for the OC Weekly. He also conntributes to the LA Times and NPR's Tell Me More and American Public Media's Weekend America.

Ask a Mexican, based on the column of the same name, explores the cliches of lowriders, busboys, and housekeepers, confronts the bogeymen of racism, xenophobia, and ignorance, and will probably offend you in some interesting way.

At the Seventh Level (Coyote Jones)
Review Date: 9/2/2006

Abba was a remotely beautiful world which had only joined the Tri-Galactic Federation after making concessions on its degrading treatment of women. The concessions had been slight, but as a result, one briliant female had risen to the very top of that strange society, the Seventh Level of poetry. She had become the spiteful target of male fury, female envy, and a deviously evil plot that might cost the world its status. Enter Coyote Jones, agent of the Federation...

Second of "Kingmaker, Kingbreaker", which was originally meant as a single novel. (I think she may be writing more books to follow these two.) Not bad for a first series, and very different from her next two (The Godspeaker Trilogy and Rogue Agent). I see a lot of development in her writing as she grows in to it, but they do remain on the level of pleasant "potato chip" fantasy.

Second in the Vorkosigan saga, containing the story of Miles' parents after they married as told from his mother's perspective. A great heroine and a wonderful series!

Cordelia Naismith, legendary ship commander in the Betan Expeditionary Force, a woman who beat the Barrayaran militarists at their own game, was never one to fulfill stereotypes. Having married the commander of the forces her side defeated in battle, she was ready to settle down to a quiet life devoted to raising little Vor lordlings.

But Cordelia had not paid sufficient attention to what an important Vor lord she had married; when the Emperor died, only her husband's reputation for honor stood between her adopted planet and the unspeakable horrors of a dynastic civil war fought by first-rate soldiers armed with up-to-the-minute technology...

A great little phrasebook... Organized in sections like sightseeing, shopping, health, travel, and making friends. Plenty of information about food including a menu reader, and not too much space wasted with esoteric phrases about things like passing gas, which I've never found myself needing to explain to someone in a foreign country.
