From back cover:
"Just after midnight in a small town in Wisconsin, eight women begin walking together down a rural highway. Career women, houseives, mothers, divorcees, and one ex-prom queen, they are close friends who have been meeting every Thursday night for year, sharing food, wine and their deepest secrets. But on this particular Thursday, Susan, Alice, Chris, Sandy, Gail, Mary Joanne, and Janice decide to disappeaer from their own lives.
Their spontaneous pilgrimage attracts national attention and inspires other women from all across the country. As the miles fall away and the women forge ahead on their backroads odyssey--leaving small miracles in their wake--each of their histories unfolds, tales of shattered dreams and unexpected renewal, of thwarted love affairs and precious second chances."

Having lived in Mexico, I found the book fascinating....and ever so true to life.
From the back cover:
"When Los Angeles novelist Tony Cohan and his artist wife, Masako, visted central Mexico one winter they fell under the spell of a place where the pace of life is leisurely, the cobblestone streets and sun-splashed plazas are enchanting, and the sights and sounds of daily fiestas fill the air. Awakened to needs they didn't know they had, they returned to California, sold their house, and cast off for a new life in San Miguel de Allende. "On Mexican Time" is Cohan's evocatively written memoir of how he and his wife absorb the town's sensual ambiance, eventually find and refurbish a crumbling 250-year-old house, and become entwined in the endless drama of Mexican life. Brimming with mystery, joy and hilarity, "On Mexican Time" is a stirring, seductive celebration of another way of life--a tale of Americans who, finding a home in Mexico, find themselves anew.

Torn from familiar roots, swept up in the passions of her tempestuous marriage, bewitched by an exotic world of untold splendors and primitive terrors, Laura Valentine swore to make a life for herself and her family in China.
Through war and peace, through the heat of desire and the agony of bitter loss, her love and courage would sustain them.
