This is another brillant human portrayal by this very talented Portuguese writer. He captures the essence of a person's life that may speak to multitudes of us out there. It is another raw and exposing rip into the layers of humanity that many of us would rather not see revealed. His writing is precise and poignant and forever filled with unexpected occurrences. Take the time to read this work and be in a world created by a Master Wordsmith.

This is an exciting and imaginative fiction work by a great, young, Brooklyn-based author. He mixes science, psychology and fantasy all within an academic setting and comes out with a winner. If this story does not leave you shaking your head and smiling you need to refreshen.

This is a gritty story about a real world event in LA after WWII. The action is fast with the detectives investigating this gruesome murder behaving badly at times and with "stiff upper lip" at other times. Afterall, dealing with the types of individuals involved in the criminal underworld can not leave one unscarred. The author, James Ellroy, is the real deal. He himself has a checkered past and tragedy enough for any person. His mom was murdered when he was a youngster. And they never caught that murderer either (no one was arrested in this Black Dahlia case). The language is hot and the images are brutal, but this is the real world of police investigations.

What a smart story from a fabulous Portuguese writer. You will love the way this plot unfolds as one adventure after another evolves in the horror of mass blindness (hysteria?). The author is well-known for his satiric slant in which the foibles of us humans is brought into the blinding light for everyone to see. And as quickly as the crisis erupts so the resolution is very satisfying and uplifting. Definitely worth reading. Check out his other books as well; "All the Names" is equally fascinating.

This book relates a fascinating and hardly known series of events prior to America's entry into The Great War, ie World War I. The Germans were desperate to keep supplies of all sorts away from the European powers (The Entente) that they were in battle with. The great majority of these supplies came from the United States so it was natural for secret operations in espionage and later sabotage to commence in the North American mainland. This tale of police searches and German attempts to evade detection comprise the meat of the book. It is enjoyable in the reading and is an eyeopener as to how open to foreign influences our country was in the early years of the 20th Century. That would soon change and thank God for it.

This was definitely an enjoyable read. It gave me the flavor of the original Ian Fleming series but with the style of author Faulks. There also seemed to be a hint of more of James Bond's psychology being presented but never too much. This reminds an action story and a fairly good one at that. We are taken back to a time in the early 1960's when the CIA and the British secret service are not all that trusting of each other. This is the bothersome early years of the Vietnam War in which America fights on alone with no allies. And the demon heroin and drug addiction is being used to wreck the moral and physical strength of a nation by a crazed sociopath. It is a time before 911 and Bin Laden. More a time of torturers who learned their bloody trade in the years of War War II and the post-colonial collapse of England and France.
There are fast cars and chases with interesting twists and turns in the plot that make this smooth sailing. The plot locations are excellent and the food and drink and other references are fun and send one to your foreign language dictionary. Don't forget the wild machines (really tame and realistic) and the final scenes of fighting and mayhem which always were first-rate in the James Bond books. I think you will find this story up to that standard. Give it a whirl and hope for more books in the series. Give the younger readers a taste of what we enjoyed in our youth before the fantastic excesses of the Bond movie industry.

Another good yarn by this well-respected British writer. His Inspector John Rebus is an interesting character with a hard-bitten exterior, quick with his wits, words and at times his fists, all packaged up with a very human center. The locale is Edinburgh, Scotland as absorbing a geographical place as the more familiar Oxford town in England. Here the Inspector deals with a mysterious murder with hints of satanism but ends with something more horrific and more timely. The story presents our world as we might easily recognize it and that is the connection which makes this work fun to read. Try the series out and you will enjoy the ride.

This author is a renowned master of hard science fiction, far-sighted fantasy and memorable fiction with that special touch. I am sorry I do not have this complete Dracula series to offer on this site as several volumes I lent to a friend and lost them. Dracula, as envisoned by Mr. Saberhagen, is much more complex and interesting than the pop characters we are presented with. You must check it out for yourself. When you've tried the rest, try the best.

This English author is a master of fantasy creation getting the right mix of reality with the world of ancient beliefs. Here, children and adults run through a country setting and pay careful attention not to get lost in the local woodlands. Many surprises await them there and the reader will find it tough to put the book done. Keep your eye on this author as he reminds us that our ancient myths are really only shallowly buried under our modern veneer.
