This book more than fulfills the promise of Cunningham's 1990 debut, "A Home At The End of The World", while showing that sweep does no necessarily require the sprawl of his second book, "Flesh and Blood"....Cunningham's insightful use of the historical record concerning Virginia Woolf in her household outside London in the 1920's is matched by his audacious imagining of her inner life and his equally impressive plunge into the lives of Laura and Clarissa...Rich and beautifully nuanced scenes follow one upon the other....The overall effect of this book is twofold. First, it makes a reader hunger to know all about Woolf, again; readers may be spooked at times, as Woolf's spirit emerges in unexpected ways, but hers is an abiding presence, more about living than dying. Second, and this is the gargantuan accomplishment of this small book: it makes a reader believe in the possibiltiy and depth of a community based on great literature, literature that has shown people how to live and what to ask of life.

Wonderful Nora Roberts novel with 3 favorite Irish stories: Spellbound, Ever After and In Dreams. In "Spellbound", a beautiful lady casts a thousand-year spell on the man of her dreams-and unleashes a nightmare only love can conquer. "Ever After" follows an enchanting woman as she journeys to an otherworldly land-and introduces a handsome artist to the transforming power of love. "In Dreams" links a young woman to a stranger's past-and to the curse that has trapped him forever in the eternity of his own dreams. One of my favorites!!

Rogues' Reform: The Reasons for Marriage / A Lady of Expectations / An Unwilling Conquest
Review Date: 12/28/2005
Helpful Score: 2

Three Irresistable Tales of the Lester Family of Regency England by Master Storyteller Stephanie Laurens.

"The Reasons for Marriage"-Miss Lenore Lester was perfectly content with her quiet country life, and had no desire for marriage. She took steps to remain inconspicuous when managing her brothers' house parties, and tried her best to show indifference-but to no avail! The notoriously charming Duke of Eversleigh had found her out and was quite persistent in his affections...

"A Lady of Expectations"-What Jack Lester wanted in a wife was someone rather like his sister, Lenore-attractive, capable, someone he could converse with. Impossible, given the debutantes he had seen over the past few seasons! Yet it was essential that he make his choice before the society matrons discovered that the Lesters were no longer poor as church mice...

"An Unwilling Conquest"-Harry Lester had no intention of following his sister and brother into marriage. And to avoid the matchmakers who'd gotten wind of the news that the Lester family fortunes had been repaired, he left London for Newmarket, only to find himself rescuing Mrs. Lucinda Babbacombe, a beautiful, managing widow, who refused to accept his advice! But no matter that he could not quell his desire for her-marriage was definately out!

Review Date: 12/14/2005

Stephanie Laurens collection of 2 stories, "Tangled Reins" and "Fair Juno". In "Tangled Reins", Miss Dorothea Darent had no intention of ever getting married, until a dashing stranger with hazel eyes kissed her under a mulberry tree. Haunted by their kiss, the Marquis of Hazelmere, a notorious scoundrel, was determined to win Dorothea's heart, even while she was busy dazzling other London socialites. In "Fair Juno", When the Earl of Merton suddenly found himself playing knight to a damsel in distress, he knew that his days as a notorious rake were numbered. But though the lady had seemed grateful for his assistance, she had fled the scene without revealing her name. He had to find her, though past scandals and present dangers threatened his pursuit of the myterious lady he knew was to be his destinty.
