A southern gothic where bounty hunters chase a Vietnam vet who has killed a bank officer sort of by accident. The vet is certainly suffering PTSD, though I don't think it was acknowledged when this book was written. He had lost his family, then his job, and all he had left was his truck that took him job-hunting. The bank was repossessing it, and the loan officer was a stereotypical sneering fat-boy who had not one ounce of empathy for our hero. During a convoluted fight, our guy killed the bank guy, panicked and hit the road.

He took up--sort of rescued--a young woman with a port wine birthmark down one side of her face, who was searching for the bayou woman who never died and could heal with a touch. Chased by bounty hunters, one with an appendege growing out of his chest, and the other a former Elvis impersonator with a yapping dog called Mama, the protagonists and later the hunters develop deep, touching relationships, broken people healing each other as they fight the swamp, alligators, drug dealers and dog eaters.

While I enjoyed the story, it was the verisimilitude, the sense of place, and the relationships between all of the characters that made this story. Recommended.
