THE PRINCE

The most famous advice ever written on acquiring and maintaining political power. Although written in 16th century Italy, The Prince has influenced political perceptions until the present day.

DISCOURSE ON VOLUNTARY SERVITUDE

Why do people voluntarily submit to political power? This is the central question of this 16th century essay on the psychology of obedience to authority. Etienne de la Boetie was an obscure figure about whom little is known, and no portrait of him survives. But his analysis of the structure of authority and the nature of man gives brilliant insights into the age-old conflict between state authority and individual liberty.
