There are but a handful of books that I would rate as Outstanding. This is amongst the few. I have had this book on my shelf for nearly two years but I could not bring myself to even start reading it. I don't know what I thought the book would be, but it was not that at all. When a book is so highly praised, I tend to believe it can't live up to the praise. This one did.
The stories of Amir and Hassan were heartwrenching and, at times, unfathomable but always believable because all of the characters were real and all too human. Amir, a privileged but self-centered youth, contrasts with Hassan who is anything but privileged or self-centered. Though tragedy falls to both, it's inevitably Amir who is left to bring closure. Interestingly, Hassan's open-heartedness allows him to live his life, meager though it is. Amir struggles to find peace throughout and I like to think he does, though even that is difficult for him. But isn't that the way life really is sometimes?
We're reminded that some parts of the world have never had long-lasting peace. Yet, within that backdrop, are many tales, many lessons, many faces. And those faces are recognizable.
I'm so excited by this book that I could easily tell the story, but there are other places for that. I just want to say Read the Book.
