This is a scholarly work, and can be a little dry and repetitive at times. But if you stick with it, you get a really good idea of life in New York in the early 19th C. The murder itself and subsequent solution are pretty straight-forward. This isn't a "whodunnit" but rather a "whydunnit" with no real answer.

The period atmosphere is superbly done and well worth the read.
