The author of CHILDHOOD'S END, RENDEZVOUS WITH RAMA, 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, and THE FOUNTAINS OF PARADISE, (besides being the inventor of the space satellite) teams up with the author of MANIFOLD TIME, EVOLUTION, and COALESCENT to produce a strange, thought-provoking novel.
All in an instant the entire Earth is carved up into separate regions, each culled from other times and places of the planet. Then the poor, abused planet is patched back together---minus 99% of its human population.
The few survivors attempt to regroup, the most high-tech of them homing in on a peculiar radio signal apparently coming from the city of Babylon.
But what kind of world will be remade of this basted-together planet-quilt with the hordes of Genghis Khan and the armies of Alexander the Great both converging on one little city . . . while in the air above Earth float thousands of enigmatic, otherworld observers?
