This is a very good book. The story takes place throughout the lives of a prosperous family in Afghanistan and the family who worked as servants for the family. The story reveals so many of the horrors of a nation scarred by years of war with Russia and then the rise of the Taliban after the war. It also reveals much about childhood relationships and the guilt harbored by one of the characters over not helping his friend when a terrible tragedy occurs. This is not a book just for men or just for women. It is a great book for anyone wanting to read about the human condition in the face of adversity. It also gives a great first person insight into the conditions of a country in turmoil.
