Swift was witty, intelligent and often scathing at sarcastic social commentary. He's very humerous amist the message. Perhaps his own words offer the best taste of Swift:

"He gave the little Wealth he had, To build a House for Fools and Mad:* And shew'd by one satyric Touch, No Nation** wanted it so much: That Kingdom he hath left his Debtor, I wish it soon may have a better."

-Verses on the Death of Dr. Swift penned by Jonathan Swift
*He did leave a large portion of his estate to found a hospital for the insane.
**Meaning England in the late 1600s and early 1700s.
