  The Secret

It was our dirty little secret. It had all begun innocently enough. These things always do. We were just co-workers. If I brought her the newspaper after lunch she might offer me a handful of chips or maybe she would bring me a popsickle one hot afternoon. There couldn't be anything wrong with that, could there? She always seemed to know what I was thinking and just what I needed. It turns out we shared a common taste in music as well. If that had been all that it was, there would be nothing more to tell, but that wasn't all.

One day about mid-morning she came to my office and said quietly "C'mon, go across the street with me." There was a little place handy to the office we could walk to just across the road. How could I refuse? There was a pleading in her voice and I knew I wanted it as badly as she did, maybe even more. I called the receptionist and told her I'd be out for a short time and grabbed my jacket. We ran down the stairs, but not through the public entrance. We used the fire stairs, the ones no one ever used unless they wanted to leave without being seen. We couldn't take the chance of anyone knowing. Out the door and into the street. It had begun to rain and as the drops pelted us we weaved through the cars waiting for the traffic light. Once inside, we knew we hadn't much time. There was no shame and no delights escaped us. We were like kids in a candy store.

Now, back in the office, our hungers sated, we knew there was no turning back. It became a regular thing. Two, three, sometimes even four days a week. Fear and guilt were not enough to stop us. If my wife ever found out, it would be the end of me, but we couldn’t stop. Then as suddenly as it began, it was over. She said “I’m not going to do this any more.”, and she didn’t. It was over. she would not cave in. She went away after that. On a trip with her family. It had been weeks since our last trip across the street, and I tried to rationalize. It was better this way, but I missed it.

Then she was back. Fresh from a week in Mexico with a new tan and an attitude to match. It wasn’t two days before she stuck her head around the corner and said “C’mon. Let’s go.”.

“Really?” I said. “I thought you swore off.”.

“I did, but since I’ve been back, I don’t know what it is, but I just can’t get enough.”. That was enough for me! Grab the jacket! Down the stairs! Straight to the Mobil station across the street! We were insatiable! We must have caught the Mini-Mart just after the Frito-Lay driver left. The shelves were fairly bulging. We bought pretzels, rippled chips, plain chips, and jalepeño cheese dip. We bought Pepsi and Coke, chocolate milk, and juice. We bought Fritos and Doritos and topped it off with Gummi Bears and gum. We filled two bags and blew twenty bucks. We dragged our loot back to the office and put on a shameless display of snacking. We knew we had gone too far. It was just a temporary setback. Surely we could be good again. after all, we had gone almost four weeks before.

It was almost four o’clock when I heard her yell over the office partitions “Anybody want a Dove Bar? I’m goin’ across the street!”.
