Kelly's List

1. The Biggest Loser - Post your TBR count, as of January 1st, here.  Pledge to reduce that number in 2014.  (Participation can count as 1 book reduced, if you so choose) - Too much of a challenge for me.

2. Let's Make a Deal - Read a wishlisted book.  Post that book to a fellow challenger. (Posted to Shelley G.)  These is My Words, Nancy Turner, 5/5, 1 Feb. Sarah Prine's diary account of life in the Arizona Territory, 1881 - 1901.

3. American Idol - Read a book about a famous American that has been memorialized, either with a statue, city, river, building..etc named after them. The Pale Blue Eye, Louis Bayard, 4.5/5, 6 Dec. Set in 1830, West Point Academy. Features Edgar Allan Poe as a principal character during the time when he was a cadet at West Point. Very interesting and I think Bayard did an excellent job of interpreting young Poe and giving him voice.

4. Fear Factor - Read a historical mysteryAnatomy of Murder, Imogen Robertson, 4/5, 26 Jun. 2nd Crowther & Westerman. Involves murder (of course) and a spy-ring conspiracy between France and England, set in 1781. These books take a little while for me to get into, but then they develop and are really quite good ... good characters, tight plot line, nice advancement as a series.

5. Deal or No Deal - Pick 6 books at random off your TBR list.  Let us know if they were duds ($.01), worthy ($100,000) or the jackpot ($1mill)

a. The Wordsmith's Tale, Stephen Edden, 4.5/5, 6 May. This is a "Worthy" book! Definitely enjoyable, very clever way to cover 100 years in Saxon England! Loved the subtle and clever bits of humor! (This book was chosen by Aubree for me to read (HF game selection.))

b. Orphan Train, Christina Baker Kline, 5/5, 15 May. "Jackpot" book! Very compelling and one of the best books I've read using two time periods to tell the story; also a mixture of 1st and 3rd person. Tells the story of Niamh (Vivian) who was sent west from NYC as part of an orphan train in 1929. (I needed a book, and this one was sitting on the dining room table, begging to be chosen. Complete random choice!)

c. The Anatomist's Wife, Anna Lee Huber, 3/5, 8 Jun. "Worthy" book, but was nearly a DNF for me. First person narrative is a bit tedious, but characters are compelling and the plot was intriguing and nicely developed. Widow and artist Lady Darby and Sebastian Gage, inquiry agent, investigate a brutal murder in the home of of Lady Darby's brother-in-law's castle in Scotland. Set in 1830. (Read this book in case it was selected in a game. At the time I plucked it off the shelf, it was a random decision.)

d. The Food Tester, Peter Elbling, 2/5, 4 Jul. A "Dud" book. Too over the top, just a little too unrealistic for me. Set in Renaissance Italy, story of Ugo the Food Tester and Duke Federico. Kept my interest, but just barely. (Selected the 25th book on one of my TBR shelves in honor of Bil's birthday.)

e. The Spymistress, Jennifer Chiaverini, 4.5/5, 29 Oct. A "Worthy" book. Well-researched, well-written story about Elizabeth Van Lew, the Richmond, VA southern woman who became an influential and important spy for the Union during the Civil War. (This book was chosen for me by LaVonne during a HF game.)

f. The Mevrouw who Saved Manhattan, Bill Greer, 4/5, 14 Dec. A "Worthy" book! A funny, irreverent look at New Amsterdam from early settlement of Fort Orange through 1664 when the Dutch signed over their lands and New York was born! (Picked this book off the shelf, completely at random, prior to an out of town trip!)

g. Flint, Margaret Redfern, 4/5, 22 Dec. Story of two brothers skilled at digging ditches and dams sent as part of a work crew to Wales where they helped build Edward I's castle.

6. Password - Read a book that contains a secret society or exclusive club.  Circles of Time, Phillip Rock, 4.5/5, 10 Aug. This is the second in the Passing Bells trilogy and takes place in the early 1920's, post WW I, with the causes for what would become WW II already developing. Wonderful book and particularly applicable for this category w/ all the secret organizations and groups that formed in Germany following WW I, the National Socialist (Nazi) party, being one of them.

7. To Tell the Truth - Read a book whose main character is a religious figure OR a book set in a religious institution.

8. Hollywood Squares - We all know the book was better.  Read a book that was turned into a movie or TV show/miniseries.

9. Win, Lose or Draw - Read a book that contains a duel.

10. The X Factor - X marks the spot! Read a book that contains a map, a pirate or a hidden treasureRome: The Coming of the King, M.C. (Manda) Scott, 4.5/5, 29 Apr. I enjoyed this 2nd book more than the 1st one of the series. The book is set in 66 AD, primarily in Jerusalem. Romans vs Hebrews vs the new Christian religion with intrigue and betrayal throughout! Great book, typical Manda Scott. I love Pantera and Hypatia.

11. Pictionary - Read a book about art or an artist The Beautiful American, Jeanne Mackin, 5/5, 16 Nov. Book about American model, muse, photographer & WW II correspondent Lee Miller, as shared through the story of a fictional friend & the book's real MC, Nora Tours. I spent hours looking at photographs of Lee Miller, photographs by Lee Miller and the photography of her lover, another American artist, Ray Man. Her life was amazing, set primarily in Paris along with all the other artists that congregated there during the 1920's, 30's & 40's. Fascinating, well-written book with great insight & character development!

12. Project Runway - Read a book that has a headless lady on the coverThe Infamous Army, Georgette Heyer, 3.0/5, 7 Apr.  The first Georgette Heyer that I have not really enjoyed. I didn't think we were EVER going to defeat Napoleon! This book needs some updating & heavy editing. And I would have probably enjoyed the minutiae about the battle if I had had a map and a cast of characters. Loved the personal elements of the book - typical & wonderfully Georgette Heyer - but the battle scenes and background on the Allied Army were way too long and way too tedious.

13. The Newlywed Game - Read a "new to you" authorThe House Girl, Tara Conklin, 3.5/5, 19 Mar. Book is set in two time periods - Lina Sparrow, attorney, daughter of an artist, 2004; and Josephine Bell, slave and artist, 1852. Present day story concerns itself with a reparations lawsuit seeking compensation for the descendants of slaves. A little too jarring between story lines, didn't start caring about the characters until half-way through the book.

14. 1 vs. 100 - This is Sparta! Read a book that contains a revolt or has the main character fight in a battle The Pagan Lord, Bernard Cornwell, 5/5, 27 Jan. The latest in The Saxon Chronicles, with Uhtred up to his usual snarling, conflicted, cleverness. He faces Cnut in a battle where he is hugely outnumbered, but victorious nonetheless. Vintage Uhtred, vintage BC!

15. Family Feud - Read a book with two rivaling families or one family that is fighting amongst themselves,

16. Double Dare - Read the first book of two different series.

  a. Rome: The Emperor's Spy, M.C. (Manda) Scott, 4.5/5, 4 Mar. Book introduces us to Pantera, a spy trained by Seneca, now in the employ of Emperor Nero. Great book, typical Manda Scott. Only issue is that she introduces a religious angle that was a little confusing. The idea that Judas of Galilea and Jesus are the same man is not a new idea, but a wee bit upsetting nonetheless .. at least to me.

  b. The Founding, Cynthia Harrod-Eagles, 4.5/5, mid-July. The first book in the wonderful Morland Dynasty series! It was absolutely as great as I was led to believe it would be. Wonderful plot, character development, pacing, etc. .. all the things one looks for in a great historical fiction novel!

17. Love Connection - Read a book about your favorite lovebirds or a book whose main character you're absolutely in love with.

18. Wheel of Fortune - Read a book set after 1879. The Storyteller, Jodi Picoult, 5/5, 24 Aug. Multi-generational, multi-level story that centers on a young Polish girl's experiences during WW II and her incarceration at Auschwitz. In present day, her granddaughter has met an older man in a grief therapy group who has told her he was an SS Guard at Auschwitz during WW II.

19. $100,000 Pyramid - Read a book set in Egypt or any place that has sandMoloka'i, Alan Brennert, 4/5, 8 Jan. Hawaiian leper colony of late 1800's.

20. Queen for a Day - Read a book about a queen.

21. Monopoly - Pick a country.  Read 4 books set in that country. OR Pick a time period.  Read 4 books set in that time period. The War Years (WW I & WW II eras.)

a. City of Women, David Gillham, 5/5, 8 Jan. Really enjoyed this book about war-torn and depleted 1943 Berlin. Main character is Sigfrid; a woman who figures out who she is and how she can make a difference.

b.  The Girl You Left Behind, JoJo Moyes, 5/5, 20 Jan. Set in 1917 and 2006, tells the story of a painting entitled The Girl You Left Behind and its first owners - painter Edouard Lefevre and his wife Sophie and its current owner, Liv Halston.

c. Between Shades of Gray, Ruth Sepetys, 4/5, 11 MarBook is set in 1941 and follows a Mother and her two children caught up in Stalin's deportation of people from Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. Excellent book, but ending too abrupt.

d. Rose Under Fire, Elizabeth Wein, 5/5, 22 May. Rose is an American pilot who gets a job as a transport pilot in England during the last year of WW II. She ends up in Europe and ultimately captured and sent to Ravensbruck concentration camp as a political prisoner. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!

Bonus #1 - The Amazing Race - Read 6 books, each set in a different country.

Bonus #2 - Risk - Read 4 books set in South America OR 4 books set in Russia.

Bonus #3 - Chain Reaction - Link 5 books by word or letter, either through the title or author.
