Nice little book with beautiful pictures of what the dish should look like when it's done. Most use ingredients already in the kitchen with a few exceptions but nothing exotic.

A good mystery with plenty of twists and turns and unusual and interesting characters. The main character, however, is why I enjoyed this book so much - anything that can happen to him does, but it's his wise-cracking attitude that also makes you laugh - something not often found in mystery novels.

This book is a wonderful read - especially for people with ties to Chicago. You can almost smell the hot dogs steaming in Wrigley Field and hear the crack of the bat.
His description of Chicago architecture will remind you of your grandma's house and street names can bring you back to the entrance to Riverview Park. Some words he uses will only have meaning to Chicagoians (the Hawk, Da Coach). His description of a Chicago winter will make you reach for a sweater. Harvey has 'changed the names to protect the innocent', but it's easy to figure who he's referring to and fill in the names. This book starts out at full blast and never slows down - that's how I managed to read a 300 page book in 2 nights.

Cold Noses at the Pearly Gates: A Book of Hope for Those Who Have Lost a Pet (Cold Noses, Bk 1)
Review Date: 10/3/2022

It's well worth taking the time to read this book to ease the heartache of losing a pet. It was a bit wordy but many passages really help to give hope after the intense feeling of loss.

This book (printed in England) has nothing but weird, unappealing recipes in it. Some ingredients I've never heard of. It is now at the local thrift store.

If you're a Civil War buff, this book will be very interesting but if not, it's pretty graphic about the horrific conditions at Andersonville prison.

Hamilton's books usually start off running but Die A Stranger was rather slow to get going. Interesting and suspenseful as usual and after setting up the story it really took off. If you've read the first 8 books this one is well worth the read.

This is the kind of book that when you've finished the last page and close the back cover, you just sit and think "Wow". The story is well written and keeps moving along and hard to put down once it's started. This is a must read before Easter.

A few low fat recipes, some using Splenda, others egg substitutes but not that many that are really low carb. Apricot bars: 19 carbs per bar, Apple stuffed acorn squash: 44 carbs per 1/2 squash or Turkey sausage bean soup: 42 carbs per 3/4 cup.Plus most recipes have more ingredients than the average cook has on hand.

If you're a fan of old movies on the TCM channel - this will be a fun read. The murder mystery is not deep and complex but with plenty of references to stars from the 40's and earlier, and movie lines that will test your memory, it will leave you anxious to read Valentino's 2nd book.

From casseroles and stews to stove-top dishes: One-pot, slow-pot & clay-pot cooking
Review Date: 2/12/2018

This book was printed in England and has some of the weirdest ingredients I've heard of - some I've never heard of. You could try Marinated Pigeon in Red Wine which calls for 1 1/4 cup 'game stock' -try finding that at Wal-Mart. Better yet try "Octopus & Red Wine" (Lots of these recipes call for red wine - maybe to settle the stomach). Cooks Tip for this one is "Discard the head since it can be very tough". Who wants their dinner looking at them anyway? And for a crowd pleaser go for the "Poussins with herb Dumplings" Poussins????
The dumplings call for 1/2 c shredded suet - I know suet can be purchsed at Wal-Mart in the bird seed department - just pick out the sunflower seeds. Overall, unless you're a very adventurous cook you might want to pass on this book.

This is one of the funniest books I've ever read. The premise itself is odd in that an undertaker is an amateur sleuth, but the dialogue is laugh out loud funny. If you like Who-Dun-Its with a bit of humor this book is a sure bet.

Quite a few surprises in Book 2, but a good continuation of characters from Book 1. As always, good writing from Burke.

An absolutely beautiful book. The series "All Creatures" follows the book's narrative very closely and after seeing the actual photos of places featured in the series, it really connects you to the characters and places in the program.

Kiss Her Goodbye: A Houston Cash Novel

Good Who-Done-It with likable characters. Plenty of twists and turns with humorous dialogue thrown in. Think Magnum PI. This is book 1 with Houston Cash - hopefully Harvey Burgess will continue this series.

The premise of this book seemed really good - an "old dog" deputy tracking desperados and refusing to give up. First book I've read by this author and only got half way through it since it seems more appropriate for young readers. Dialogue and plot are simple and suspense is nil.

This book is #2 of a 3 part excellent series. The combining of the early Christians with the inner workings of the Roman Empire makes for an outstanding historical saga.

Life of Tom Horn: Government Scout and Interpreter
Review Date: 12/20/2017

This was one of the best books I've ever read. It follows Tom Horn from about 16 years old up through his 50's and all the way along it moves quickly and is never dull. The movie with Tom Selleck only portrays a small part of Tom Horn's life and it really doesn't convey the emotions in the book. It could be just "another cowboy movie". If you enjoy westerns this book is a MUST READ!

This book is a must read for anyone who has made a shelter dog a member of their family. We rescue them from uncertainty and loneliness but as is often said, "they rescue us." The story of Oogy is amazing how an abused dog can give so much love and open human eyes to the wonder of sharing life with another living creature.

This is such a heartwarming story that when you finish the last page you'll just want to sit quietly and smile. The bond between Martin and Mumble is incredible - for an owl and a human. The information about owls is fascinating so if you're looking for a genuine "feel good" story, this is it.
