Anthem is Ayn Rands classic tale of a dark future age of the great "We"a world that deprives individuals of name, independence, and values. Written a full decade before George Orwell's "1984," this dystopian novel depicts a man who seeks escape from a society in which individuality has been utterly destroyed. Rand expertly shows how collectivism (including social programs in the United States) destroys freedom and individuality. Her philosophy is simple: "planning" is a synonym for "collectivism," and "collectivism" is a metaphor for communism and tyranny. This important book should be read by all who are concerned about the role of government in modern life.

Review Date: 10/7/2016

The latest additon to her Archangel series continues the stories of flat and ulikable characters such as De, Rye, Michael, Morningstar, and Mouse. The plot is full of bland and cliche twists and turns-- which you can predict long before the last page. The people (and angels) represent such a jumble of different cultures to make nearly anyone feel anoyed and overstuffed. What makes this book especially bad is the inclusion of current issues twisted to indoctornate the readers to the far leftist ideology. Morehouse uses situations in the book to criticize the increasingly theocratic tendencies of some governments. The christians are hit pretty badly. More so then the others. She examines the end of the world prophecy from diferent cultures, incorporating the mess in her book. She also counters many Biblical beliefs, using her preaching voice and the far left ideas of correct way of thinking. Last Note: do not read the series out of order. This is not a stand alone book.

This novel centers around a force that is unwittingly unleashed on the world via a archaelogical dig. This force has the ability to possess certain hosts and reduce anything in it's path to cinders. What exactly this being is unfortunately is never explained at all. It is one one of the major downfalls of this book.

After the force is unleashed it makes a journey via boat to a town in PA where it finds a more permanent host and things get more interesting. This small town in PA has a interesting past all it's own that ties in with the entity but why is another reason not explained. There also is apparently a love story here that is not neccessary and just make's the story seem more muddled.

All this being said it is a decent book. The characters are well developed and you'll find yourself genuinely caring about them and what happens. The story is also fast paced and has a very crisp style.I did enjoy it for the most part but in the long run it is nothing too special and there are much better books out there that i would reccommend.

Assembly Pocket Manga (Pocket Manga (Antarctic Press))

Hot off the Antarctic Press, aspiring manga-ka Sherard Jackson brings us the first of the four-volume novel "Assembly," a futuristic story set in a totalitarian city-state at war with rebel factions. Against her big sister's wishes, young Shon enlists in the state military to show her national pride and help pay the bills. Though landing a medical job that keeps her as far from combat as possible, it's not long before Shon is given mech-pilot status and thrown into the front lines.

While you may turn a skeptical eye towards American manga, there's actually decent storytelling and artwork here. Jackson provides an interesting twist on the rebels-against-the-Man story, depicting a "government lap dog" as the hero. The story is also a twist on the giant robot genre, rejecting the classic accidental hero in favor of a headstrong kid who's in way over her head.

Jackson also rejects consistency with his artistic style for desired effects. In casual scenes, the art is something you'd find in a typical webcomic. It then gets more abstract to match the chaos of the fight scenes. But Jackson saves his true talent for the most dramatic moment in the story, and gets a rather haunting result in the process. A gallery of Jackson's character and mechanical designs is also included.

Overall, the sci-fi/drama crowd might get a kick of this one. But given the current political/social atmosphere, the comic may also earn itself more flack than it really deserves.
