Ask Larry
Ask Larry
Author: Larry Townsend
Book Type: Paperback

Review Date: 6/18/2006

The collected "Leather Notebook" columns.

Twelve years of Masterful advice (and the occasional command) from Larry Townsend, the leatherman's long-time confidant and adviser. Starting just before the onslaught of AIDS, Townsend wrote the Leather Notebook Column for Drummer magazine, tackling subjects from sexual technique to safer sex, whips to welts, Daddies to dog collars.

Now, with Ask Larry, readers can avail themselves of Townsend's collected wisdom as well as the author's new commentary - a careful consideration of the way life has changed in the AIDS era, and the specific ways in which the disease has altered perceptions of once-simple problems.

Any man worth his leathers can't afford to miss this volume from one of the tribe's most celebrated - and trusted - scribes.

I grabbed this at a library sale, figuring that if it was bad, it was surely wishlisted. Anyways, I was very pleased to find that it was actually interesting, despite my lack of enthusiasm on the subject of American History. Yes, I am one of those people whom if you said "Garfield", I would think of the orange cat, but now I find I quite like the former president as well. Well worth the read as it's both informative and entertaining.

I recommend this novel to anyone who enjoyed Girl, Interrupted. It not only shows how rough it was to be gay in the 60's (and presumably before then too), but how tough it was just being different in general (one lady in the asylum is there, basically, because she is deaf). I enjoyed the writing style, it had a very flowing rhythm and fit the situation well.

This is a book of horror and dark fantasy short stories, although I personally thought many in the dark fantasy half could qualify as horror also. Some stories were more original than others, with some, like the award-winning "Cram" being excellent. It was worth reading if you enjoy short fiction.

Frank Galvin, a smart Irishman from the tough side of town, is the star litigator at a blue-chip Boston law firm. But the irresistable lure of a beautiful woman with a devastating secret threatens his hard-won acceptance by "the establishment".

Suddenly, Frank finds himself on the wrong side of a ferocious legal war - hired to destroy the people he trusts, loyal to those he doesn't. He's facing the biggest choice of his career - and the ultimate battle between duty and honor.

Caught in the crossfire of sexual temptation and murder, he'll call on the same unorthodox methods that made things sizzle in The Verdict. But this time, Galvin's got a lot more at stake, because winning the case could mean losing everything.

When I picked this book from my shelves, I was afraid that the mere fact that I knew the world hadn't ended when the year 2000 began would hamper any enjoyment I got out of a cyber-thriller set on that very premise. However, once I started reading it and realized it was as fun as watching a disaster movie, I let my worries go. If you enjoy end-of-civilization panic, or just plain old fun disaster movies, you could do a lot worse than this book.

And they do. Too bad for Bobby the twins never learned to share. One of them is jealous, murderously jealous. Is it quiet, shy Bree? Or bold sexy Samantha? Bobby had better figure it out.. or his double fun will turn to double terror.

There are no graduates from this school. Ever.

The announcement hangs in the center of the huge bulletin board at school. The printing creeps and drips down the page, and seems to Mariah to glow with fingerprints, evil-crusted whorls of dark plans, and sick thoughts.

Night Class, the announcement reads.
If she'd known what the class would be like, she would never have signed up. Because it is a class like no other.

A class that teaches terror.

Mariah wishes she could escape. But it's too late. The class is closed and Mariah is trapped.
Forever.

"Cruising Manhattan's young and beautiful scene on a Harley Davidson, Nick Laws is on a desperate search for supermodels or, as he puts it, "Thing." Whether throwing parties for that one in 50,000 who is "hot. Thing hot," fending off "Civilians" (everyday girls with everyday looks) or convincing Thing to dump "Guy" (everyday boy, everyday looks), Nick is driven by Thing-how to get it and how to enjoy it. After a few freakish days in Miami, his mother's funeral and a bitter family reunion, however, his world threatens to unravel, leading him to bare his soul to a Civilian. But for how long will this uncharacteristic behavior hold? Though the world that Felske paints is self-consciously hipper-than-thou, he holds his portrait of it in check with a ribald sense of humor and an understanding of the limitations of Nick's ways. Tight prose and smooth dialogue impel the story along, while the names of so many trendy New York night spots dot the text that hipster wannabes can use it as a guidebook. This first novel isn't much deeper than the characters it portrays, but it captures their gloss with a smart shine of its own."
