Read the synopsis. It is all that. Amazing that a story about a chess match can be riveting.

I LOVE this book - over 200 cartoons by John McPherson. He definitely has his finger on the pulse of the everyday family and illustrates it with clean hilarious humor we can all relate to. I give this book to all my best friends with children.

John McPherson's cartoons are family friendly and applicable in so many ways. It is pure genius to make them into postcards.

The Greatest Mystery Stories of the 20th Century
Review Date: 9/19/2009

Fascinating stories read by superb performers. Completely absorbing. Absolutely not to be missed are "The Nine Mile Walk" by Harry Kemelman, and "The Blue Cross" by G. K. Chesterton. However, some other of the stories are very graphic, dealing with grisly crimes and sexual situations. I didn't finish the collection because, not being familiar with all the stories, I didn't know what to expect and which ones I would rather skip.

This book was super helpful, exactly what I needed. It is very informative in lay-person accessible language. If you suffer from back pain, or a host of ailments related to the back, you really need to consider the possibility of a mind-body connection.

Eight 1.5 hour cassettes read by Karen White. The reader liltingly accomplishes the impossible with different southern voices for each character.

Miss Julia Springer combines Southern grace, the dignity of a woman "of a certain age," an encyclopedic knowledge of etiquette, and a bitingly sharp tongue. A happy couple was planning a perfunctory courthouse wedding, but Miss Julia has plans of her own for a real honest-to-goodness ceremony, albeit with some shortcuts on the etiquette side. Miss Julia's caustic wit and unstoppable drive mean that the couple is going to get married the right way. This is a gem of a Southern comic novel.

"Good-natured entertainment, done with a sharp eye for the details of small-town southern life." (Kirkus Reviews)

A wonderful guide to finding the best books for kids, most useful for children up to about twelve years old (or sixth grade), but that is merely a subjective categorizing and we know that good books are appreciated on many different levels and at different ages. A good read-aloud book at one age may make a great read-alone a few years later. Organized by genre and recommended audience age, "More Books" also contains indexes by subject, title, author, illustrator; and a bibliography of other resource books helpful to the parent or professional. Consult it before heading to the library and you'll be armed with the currency you need for a satisfying library "shopping" trip.

Our family took part in the 1989 Washington stat centennial wagon train - never having driven or worked with horses and mules before. Along the way, we read this book aloud with our children. It was surprising how many experience we had in common with the greenhorn pioneer.

Historically factual, told in Glen Rounds engaging storytelling style.

Packed with essays and stories from what may be considered humorists. Some are humorous. I tend to be very conservative and found enough that I did not appreciate to keep me from getting very far in the book. But that is not to say it won't appeal to some others.

I was eager to begin this book, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, 1994, and the National Book Award, 1993. Fifteen minutes into it, it seemed to be headed somewhere I didn't want to go, so I abandoned the listening of it. Had I known it had been made into an R rated movie, I might have been forewarned.

Not my cup of tea.
