Good book in a good series. Sometimes I forget that Jane is a former street kid and get a bit incredulous that she's so composed for a 21 year old. But then I think about the previous books and what she's gone through and hey, it's fiction and keep on liking the story. I took it to jury duty with me and finished it in 4 hours:)
Now I'd like to see MacDuff story and Jock's stories!

An Eve Duncan Forensics Thriller- but really is mostly about Jane McGuire, Eve and Joe's adopted daughter. Mark Trevor re-enters Jane's life both to protect her and to enlist her help. The enemies this time are Reilly who brainwashes men into being killers and Grozak, who is planning terrorist attacks across America. Thrown in is Cira, an ancient slave and mega woman whom all concerned seem fascinated with. The action takes place in Scotland, Italy and America and is fast pace and intense. Another good read by Johansen

"Don't kill her she's no good to us dead." These words haunt Jane MacGuire. She thought she'd escaped a random kidnapping, but she's about to learn that the truth is for more terrifying.
Now Jane is running for her life. Her adoptive parents can't help, the FBI can't help. no one can. Except a man who may be more dangerous than those pursuing her.
It sounds far more exciting than it is, maybe you'll feel different.

FROM THE PUBLISHER
""Don't kill her. She's no good to us dead." These words haunt Jane MacGuire after a shocking attack shatters her world in an instant. Was it a random kidnapping attempt - or the countdown to something far more sinister?" "Who is after her - and what do they want so badly they'll kill anyone in their way? That's what Jane is determined to find out, without the help of the police, the FBI, or her adoptive parents, forensic sculptor Eve Duncan and her husband, Joe Quinn, of the Atlanta PD - because whoever is after her won't hesitate to hurt those she loves the most. Now Jane will go on the run with the only man who may be more dangerous than those who are pursuing her. A smuggler, a con man, and who knew what else, Mark Trevor had his own mysterious reasons for wanting to keep Jane safe and out of the hands of a killer obsessed with a two-thousand-year-old mystery that could rock the modern-day world." Orphaned at an early age, Jane grew up the hard way, but she was given a new life, a loving family, and a chance to pursue her interest in one of the greatest archaeological finds ever unearthed. Now someone was trying to destroy that new life before it could even get started. The past is returning with the kind of vengeance that knows no mercy. The countdown has already begun, and it's approaching zero faster than anyone thinks.

After a botched kidnapping attempt and the death of a friend, Jane MacGuire is running for her life. The only man who can help her is Mark Trevor, a con man who has his own reasons for wanting to keep Jane safe from a relentless killer. As Jane and Trevor try to solve a 2,000 year old mystery of Cira's gold, they need to stop international terrorists from carrying out their deadly plot.

This is a continuation of Johansen's previous book, Blind Alley. When I finished Blind Alley, I was relieved the hunt for Cira's gold was over. In this book we are hunting for it again, going up against international terrorists who want the gold too. I was so BORED with this story. At least the last 100 pages were somewhat interesting. And, I'm sorry to say, we still haven't found the treasure. I hope this plot isn't revisited in the next book or I may have to just give up on this series. My rating: 2 Stars.

Prolific bestseller Johansen subjects gutsy Jane Maguire to more troubles in her latest thrill ride. Jane, the adopted daughter of forensic sculptor Eve Duncan, was threatened by one serial killer in 1999's The Killing Game and another in 2004's Blind Alley, so it's no surprise that she's in danger again. The once troubled adolescent is now a brilliant Harvard student and talented artist who spends her summers at far-off archeological digs in Pompeii and Herculaneum, but she's still haunted by her resemblance to Cira, a woman who lived 2,000 years ago in the latter city. Suddenly she's being ambushed in alleys. Does the attempted kidnapping have something to do with Blind Alley's climax, in which Eve; her husband, Joe Quinn of the Atlanta PD; soldier of fortune Mark Trevor; and Jane, the bait, triumphed over the psychopath who was killing women who looked like Cira? You bet it does, as Trevor turns up in Cambridge, enigmatic but still definitely magnetic, determined to protect Jane from danger due to new developments regarding Cira, "the femme fatale of the ancient world." Seems all kinds of notorious criminals are after Cira's lost gold, but some people have mass murder on their minds. Action, romance, castles, bomb plots and a booby-trapped hideaway in snowbound Idahowhat more could Johansen fans want?

This book grabs you and doesn't let go until the end.

If you have read BLIND ALLEY, this is a MUST as it continues the story 4 years later. If not...still an excellent read!

Jane is no longer a child, she is in college. She has learned from her years as a foster child and on the street and from the love of Eve and Joe, who took her in many years before.

The man,Mark Trevor, she thought was left in her past is now back. Is he there to help her or use her or ??? Jane runs for her life and must help find those who want her. Does Trevor help or is he one she should be running from?

The book will keep you on the edge of your seat!

Adventure/romance featuring archaeology, ancient Italian history, scrolls, gold, brainwashing, hired killers, Scottish aristocracy, mercenary helicopter pilots who can fly off at the drop of a hat, you get the drift. I think the author tried to fit too many
things into one plot line! And of course you have the fiery often angry heroine who tries to resist her romantic attraction to the noble hero with a criminal streak
