This is a very different Christmas book, and enjoyable. But don't expect sweet and sappy and lovey. Short stories, all, so can be read in quick bursts. The irony, the dark side, of the stories give a special twist to the holiday theme.
As only Maeve Binchy can do, these stories evoke the magic and spirit of Christmas in ways that ordinary folks can relate to. No glossing over of relationship troubles, Binchy offers a nourishing view of the holidays that leads to change, growth and new beginnings. A good read.
It is a collection of short stories about people around Christmas season. It was as expected coming from Maeve Binchy's wonderful story telling ability. I enjoyed every story and was rather reluctant to finish when the last story ended. I savored the every story of relationships which happens around Christmas. Sadly since she passed away a few years ago, we can expect no more new stories.
I LOVED this book. :) It is a collection of short stories based around Christmas...how different people celebrate the holiday...things that happen to them. Special to read around the holiday, but great anytime.
These 15 stories, powerfully evoke many lives - from step-families grappling with exes to children caught in grown-up tugs-of-war - during the one holiday when feelings cannot be easily hidden. The time of year may be magical, imbued with meaning. But the situations are timeless. And Maeve Binchy makes us care about them all.
Poignant...compassionate...all the stores boast Binchy's deft touch and knowing warmth. These stores, and a dozen more, powerfully evoke many lives---from step-families grappling with exes to children caught in grown-up tugs-of-war---during the one holiday when feelings cannot be easily hidden. The time of year may be magical, imbued with meaning. But the situations are timeless.
I love Christmas themed books and I especially loved this one because it's fifteen relatively short stories. It was a pleasure picking up this book when I found a slice of time, and reading just one story. I'm gathering everything I can find of this beloved author.
A collection of Christmas short stories in the inimitable style of Maeve Binchy. Some of her best stories, they just happen to be set at Christmastime. Compelling, bittersweet reading for the holiday season, not overly sentimental. If you have been a fan of Binchy, you know there will never be another like her. If you have not yet had the opportunity to enjoy her works, this is a good place to start.
