This book was very hard to hold my interest. First, Roberta, falls in love with a guy who loves chess to the exclusion of all else. Second, the book spends too much time on Jemma's and Villiers' chess games and some more time on the bad marrage between Jemma and Elijah. By the time the book starts to focus on Roberta and Damon, Damon is already in love with her and you have no idea why. The book never really goes in-depth into Damon's character, except to show he can get a woman pregnant (who never wanted a kid so she dumps the child on Damon) and then be affectionate with the child. I'm making sure this shows up on my 'books I've read' list because I don't want to accidentally read it again (I'm sure to forget this book quickly).

Expect a lot of sex from the author known as an erotic writer--and not very good sex at that. I couldn't get into the characters. The protagonist is emotionally scarred from being abandandoned by his father and he really takes it out on his wife. She's a sad character also because after all the abuse she gets, she still falls in love with the guy. It was also annoying how she was totally helpless. I was hopefull in one scene where I thought her personality had improved and she would show some backbone, but it didn't last--in hindsight it was totally out of her character and I don't even know why the author teased me with the hope of her having any useful qualities.

From Back Cover: They could hide their painful pasts and true identities...Facing the choice of flight or a wedding she cannot abide, Kate Simon has chosen to flee. Disguised as a boy, she takes refuge in a roadside inn, and finds herself rooming with intensely secretive Christian Black. Kate is breathless in the presence of this handsome, mysterious rogue whose piercing gaze seems to strip her naked. But neither suspects that a savage storm and a murder will draw them closer together still. But not the passion in their hearts...Christian dares not let anyone learn of his haunted past-or that he is, in truth, the Earl of Canley-especially not a slip of a girl whose masculilne attire cannot disguise the exquisite female form beneath. But now that destiny and a dastardly crime have united them, Christian can no longer contain his desire to taste the nectar of Kate's sweet kiss. Danger certainly abounds, but the gravest peril might be resisting a once-in-a-lifetime passion that can heal all wounds.

Because of her brother's (William) mental condition (he's a strapping young man with the mind of a child), Miss Amelia Hadwell has turned her back on Society and is currently living quietly in a poorer neighbourhood on a meager allowance from her parents, with William, and their devoted servant, Mrs. Benson. Amelia had quite resigned herself to a lifetime of loneliness and isolation when a series of horrific murders begins to plague the neighbourhood. Because of William's condition, Amelia lives in daily fear that someone will try to pin the murders on William. And her fears are confirmed when an anonymous tip links a young man fitting William's description to the latest murder. Fortunately for Amelia, her neighbour, the mysterious and enigmatic Sebastian St. Ives, is at hand willing to offer assistance and comfort. But Sebastian also awakens in Amelia heady feelings that she had thought she had buried. Will her feelings for Sebastian get in the way of her resolve to protect her brother?
Chosen by the Great Counsel of Vampires to protect Amelia (one of the maidens whom Nefri had given part of the Medallion to), Sebastian St.Ives had thought that his task would be rather simple: keep an eye on Amelia, and to make sure that she came to no harm. What the scholarly Sebastian had not counted on was Amelia's valour, her determination to protect her brother at all cost, and the strong attraction he would feel for her. Now, faced with a cunning foe who has figured out exactly how to bring Amelia down, Sebastian will have to be twice and clever and twice as ruthless. But can he do this feeling as he does for Amelia?

Become competitors in a legendary hunt.

The prize of the month-long contest is powerful enough to change history, and Kaderin will do anything to win it for her sisters. Wanting only to win her, forever, Sebastian competes as well, taking every opportunity -- as they travel to ancient tombs and through catacombs, seeking relics around the world -- to use her new feelings to seduce her. Entertaining book although the foreshadowing at the beginning of each chapter took out any element of surprise. Helena's adroit use of cane (because of her trouble walking) was used very well in sticky situations.
