Rifkin is an internationally-known social thinker who has made it his mission to call out social Darwinism and some of the pitfalls associated with genetic engineering and the relationship between humanity and the rest of nature. Taken it its historicial context, this book provides a window into the anti-genetic engineering sentiment that arose in response to more broad applications of the emerging molecular biology technologies.

This book provides a most excellent translation of this classic 19th C. tale chronicling the affair of a married Russian socialite and an affluent military officer. Shunned from high society when the affair is found out, Anna becomes increasingly isolated and suspicious that her lover has committed infidelities against her. She ultimately commits suicide by train when consumed by her own conflicting feelings. Thus, Anna's pain allows Tolstoy to explore the themes of hypocrisy, jealousy, faith, fidelity, family, marriage, society, progress, carnal desire and passion, notably juxtaposed against the experiences of several other couples as the story unfolds. Tolstoy also explores aspects of Russian life associated with the country [agrarian connection to land] in contrast to the lifestyles typical of the city. An excellent read!

Jeremy Rifkin has written a most provocative book. As a practising applied scientist, I consider that his criticisms and predictions tend to be based on the His writing style can be a little irritating and dramatic, but having attended some presentations that he has made, realize that is a manifestation of his own rhetorical voice. He is a social thinker, not a scientist. But his book is worthy of being read by people from many different walks of life, both within and outside of the sciences. His ideas have value for helping shape one's own opinions, even if you do not agree with him on every point.

As a practicing ecologist, I found Avise's account an interesting autobiography. In the tradition of E.O. Wilson, it recounts how his love of the natural world and his intellectual curiosity combined and led him to take up an interdisciplinary career studying issues at the interface of natural history and genetics, fields that previously were studied separately. While his healthy ego occasionally gets the better of him, these occasional passages are forgivable -- Avise's achievements and professional publications support that he has the credentials to back it up.

Change One: The Breakthrough 12-Week Eating Plan: Lose Weight Simply, Safely Forever
Review Date: 6/27/2012

Excellent and reasonable approach for sustained weight loss! Focuses on slowly learning about better nutrition, making better choices, and changing behaviors that contribute to becoming (and remaining) overweight. My family has benefitted tremendously from this book, particularly my husband, who now controls diabetes completely through his dietary intake, and having lost about 75 pounds, has better blood chemistry than when he was in college (he's over 50 now). It does not matter if you are young, middle aged, or elderly, this book puts YOU in charge of changing just one thing in your lifestyle each week. We liked feeling more in control of making the decisions, and have together lost and kept off over 100 pounds as a couple.

Forcing the Spring: The Transformation of the American Environmental Movement
Review Date: 7/22/2012

Gottlieb presents the history of how environmentalism arose as a coalition of earlier movements that had not previously been defined as environmental. He was the first to consider how other sociological concerns such as race, ethnicity, gender and even economic class have contributed to the evolution of environmentalism as we know it today. Gottlieb's work initially evoked some important controversies, and presents many points to ponder.
