While I am a fan of Gena Showalter, this once again is one of her fun to read but forgettable books. I get caught up in the moment while reading but a week or so later can't tell you what it is all about. This book is her take on the recent infatuation with immortals or otherworld beings. I enjoyed the premise of the book but I reccomend this only for a light and fun read. Seek out Sands, Ward or Joyce if you want a deeper reading experience. This book and from the excerpt for the next book is a 'beach' read.

First off, I must say that I'm a picky reader and I LOVED this series. This was my first exposure to Gena Showalter and she's not only a great story-teller, but she is humorous and thoroughly entertaining. I couldn't put the book down and have recommended her to every reader I know.

First time I've read Showalter. Overall it's a good read. What I did like? The dark brooding men - tortured literally. What I didn't like - how can you be an immortal warrior living in modern day Budapest and NOT know what Tylenol is - when you're stuck inside all day surely you watch a little daytime TV.

It's either hit or miss with Showalter's writing. This was way too close to JR Ward's series. This was a big miss for me - I didn't even finish the book.

I'm don't read paranormal romance very often. But I fell in love with the Main characters of this book. Wonderful story, I can't wait to read the rest of them. Gena Showalter writes an excellent book.

This is one of the best series EVER! I love Gena Showalter's imagination. The men are sexy as heck and just as passionate. This is one of those books you stay up all night reading b/c you have to know what happens on the next page.

I thought this was a GREAT book! I read a few other comments that had me worried so I only ordered the first book in the series. Now I wish I had them all here! I couldn't put it down. It kept my interest from page one all the way to the end. And it wasn't like a typical first book in a series, meaning that every page wasn't spent teaching you about ALL the characters so you'd understand when you read the other books. The focus was on Ashlyn & Maddox. By the end, I was in tears and rooting for the couple. GREAT READ!

Even though I loved this book, it is some what a rip off of the Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. Ward. If you are planning to read this book, I suggest you read J.R. Ward book first.

I wont lie, I was afraid that this book was going to be just like every other paranormal romance book out there these days, and in some ways it was. However, I really did enjoy the story and the characters. The setup of the story very much reminds me of J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series, or Jacqueline Franks Nightwalker series. However, regardless of the similarities this book was very good. I really enjoyed the world that was created, as well as the characters that went with it. Definitely, a good read for those that really arent finished with the paranormal/thriller/romance genre yet.

The first true book of the Lords of the Underworld begins with Maddox. Once a warrior who protected and guarded the gods, he is now a tortured and immortal warrior who resides on Earth. His pride having been stung because Pandora was chosen over him to guard a sacred box that housed demons, he and others that felt the same planned to prove Pandora was not suited to the task. But when they unleashed the demons, they found that even they could not best the creatures. As punishment each warrior was cursed to possess one of the released demons. Maddox was cursed with the demon of Violence, and due to its violent nature Maddox was taken over by the demon's nature without no way to control it and ended up killing Pandora. As punishment for killing the chosen warrior of the god's Maddox was doubly cursed - ever night at midnight he would be killed, with the same sword he used to kill Pandora and his soul would be taken to hell and there it would remain until morning.

Loved this book as much as those of JR Ward's Brotherhood. I mean what's not to like if you are into paranormal. We have a group of Greek God's banished warriors, demons, battles for eternity, new gods, an institute for abnormal and a human with paranormal activities. I thought that the book was well written with interesting devolpments. I can't wait to read more... Hot, Hot, Hot!

romance. I also liked the fact that Ashyln was not some great beauty,

This book held my interest but I do have to say, after reading authors who utilize pretty graphic sexual relationships, like Sherrilyn Kenyon and JD Robb/Nora Roberts, Gena Showalter is WAY more dark and erotic in her sex. I was unprepared for that. I did enjoy the book and do have the other two to read but I am not sure that the over the top eroticism actually added anything to the book. If anything, it kept me from loving it.
All in all a good book and in interesting story. I do look forward to the other two but at least I will be prepared, as will you now... :)

This is a good series for someone looking to read a different kind of paranormal romance, one thats hot and engaging.
That being said this is not the best of the bunch. It has wonderful portions...and really annoying ones.
The Lord of the Underworld are men cursed to house demons within themselves. Maddox is the keeper of violence. He is also cursed to die a painful death each night only to be resurrected each morning. Ashlyn is a woman with a psychic ability-she can her the conversations that took place in an area in the past. She works for an institution that studies paranormal creatures. But her gift causes her great pain-she cannot tune out the voices. Than she meets Maddox and finds that his touch can offer her much needed silence-and well as untold passion.
The best parts are the plot, the ideas, and the world. The use of Greek mythology is clever and entertaining. The other characters that are introduced are also captivating.
I was not wholly in love with either main character, but their romance is hot. There are times when you really feel for them. Ashlyn is a difficult character to relate to. This story establishes characters and mythology for an ongoing series. The h/h were both fairly compelling and their story was passionate and well told. However the dialogue toward the end of the book became increasingly eye-rolling and character's "voices" started to sound the same. Halfway through the book I was ready to write a 5-star review but by the end I had dialed down my effusiveness to about a 4 star. Still good but the decreasing quality of the dialogue and character defining moments had the story ending more with a whimper.

Definitely a book that will get your blood boiling on a cold winter day ladies. What is there to say about this book. I could not put the book down once I started it. Maddox so protective of Ashlyn almost to a fault. The fact that you truly get to see his feelings for her by the end of the book is great. It's a little heartwrenching of a scene but you tryly get to see his love for her at that point. Ashlyn is the only women that could tame Maddox and his demon violence. She did this with kindness, love, and understanding. Something Maddox never thought he could experience.

I am a fan of Gena Showalter books, Lords of the Underworld is a great series of books,but have found that it is best to start in the beginning with her books in order to understand her thread for writing this set of series. Great reading!

Of the 3 Lords of the Underworld books, this one is my favorite. I liked the way Ashlyn and Maddox (Violence) interacted together. Ashlyn is a good match for violence because she seemed to come off as innocent and a little naive, which is the total opposite of violence.
Even though they are demons, you can't help but to like them. They don't seem like demons, but more like frat house. The only fault I could find with the story was that even though they are centuries old they could at least try to keep current with the world. Paris and Torin are the only ones who seem to know what is going on in this century. You would think if they didn't want to draw attention to themselves they would at least try to blend in. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by The Darkest Night. It was very good. Ashlyn works for a parapsychology institute; she can read the thoughts of beings (human and supernatural) from the past at any given place. In Budapest, she hears of "angels" that live in a castle that she hopes may be able to help her. In the course of searching for them, she runs into Maddox, whose demon is Violence. The voices instantly stop when he is around and she doesn't wish to leave his side. Not only does Maddox have to deal with his demon, he is cursed to die a violent death every night. He wants nothing to do with this human, but something about her compels him. I really liked Ashlyn and Maddox. Even though they fell for each other quickly, the feelings and passion rang true. I also liked the lore behind the Warriors and their different demons. It made for an fascinating and different read. I thought the mystery was quite suspenseful and even though I knew this was going to end HEA, I was on the edge of my seat wondering how the author was going to pull it off. I'm interested to see what's in store for the rest of the Warriors.

I enjoyed the book enough to finish it in one sitting; but I have to admit, I am very disappointed in the subject/story line. This is almost an exact "softer" version of J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood. There are just too many similarities: six brothers; in a remote castle; each with a "demon" of their own that allows them to not be close to women; yet they fall in love with their saviour. Not only that, but the "demons" are way to similar: Maddox with a beast that wants to kill everything, Aeron covered in tattoos, Lucien's face all scarred, Torin wears gloves because he can't touch anyone, Paris is so handsome women fall at his feet and he can't get enough sex, etc. The only difference that I could find, is that the "Lords" are not vampires. I will give the next book in the series a try, ONLY in hopes that it gets better or more original.

This book is about immortal warriors of the Greek gods. Each one has a personal demon to deal with. I mean that literally. As punishment for a prank gone wrong eons ago, each male is cursed with the spirit of a demon - Violence, Wrath, Disease, Death, Pain, and Promiscuity. Each male lives in uneasy harmony with his demon.
What I liked: The heroine isn't your usual too stupid to live, weepy woman who is instantly ready to jump into bed with the hero. In several situations, she reacts as a normal level-headed woman would do when confronted by such oddities. She's attractive, but not necessarily gorgeous as a model.
Showalter is able to tell the history of these immortals in a way that doesn't bog down the story. Far too often, the first book in a series spends a lot of time telling the back story. This book sets up nicely the next book to follow. I especially liked the heroine to come in the next books - Danika. She's very spunky and straightforward. I'm looking forward to reading her relationship with the immortal Reyes.
What could have been better: The romantic relationship takes a while to get going. It comes in after about a hundred pages. This book has some graphic love scenes, but it's not as graphic as some other books and it's pretty vanilla. Some people prefer not to have highly detailed love scenes so if you're not into that, you can just skip the book or just skip those sections. You couldn't pry this book from my cold lifeless body. I found myself raging with the warriors, crying at their losses, and falling in love over and over despite their bitter turmoil with their inner demons which possess them.
Ashlyn is a girl with the unique ability to hear words that were spoken in a room, no matter when they had taken place. She begins this story searching for any help or relief from this curse which leads her to a fortress in Budapest rumored to hold angel or demons. Maddox is an immortal warrior doomed to carry the demon of Violence merged with his soul trapped and cursed in solitude within the fortress. Outside forces (Hunters) seek to trap the demons and rid the world of Violence, Disease, Wrath, etcthe brother warriors of Violence. Together Ashlyn and Maddox discover how much they really need one another.
The story was griping enough to keep me turning the pages (fast). I did not completely buy the subplot of this story (which carries to the next book I presume), but I didnt care. I loved being wrapped up with the passion between Maddox and Ashlyn. Foreplay yummie-ness, with a possessive glazed twist. Although I think I expected much more from the demon of Violence, and a much much darker path, I was ok with the gentle character decisions of Showalter. I cant wait for the next!

5 WORDS - COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN! Great book! So looking forward to reading them all. And I have now requested more of Gena Showalters books.
An interesting mix of characters dealing with various demons unleashed from Pandora's Box...a few too many characters at time that it gets confusing as to who is who...but not a bad start to a series. The instant attraction and bonding could have used a bit more supernatural feel, but all in all, was your typical love story with a little twist. I'd give it 3 1/2 out of 5 stars.

I really really enjoyed Showalter's intensity in this book. I liked Maddox's inner conflict, Ahslyn's quiet (sometimes not so quiet) determination. It is my first and if this book is any representation of what her writing is like I will be reading them ALL!!

This book started out really strong for me, but has since lost its steam. 200+ pages in and the real action concerning the plot is just now starting. Also, normally when the POV changes throughout the book I usually don't mind and even welcome another perspective, but with this book I don't really care for the others characters. So when I hit these points I tend to just put the book down, which is why it is taking me so long for such an easy read.
Thankfully around the last 60 pages it picked back up a little for me. Although it was still kind of anti-climactic action wise, but the way it came together though a bit predictable was interesting.

Truly enjoyed this book. It is a blend of many of the current paranormal ideas. The blend is fascinating and engaging. I plan on reading the entire series, unless something drastically changes.

Definitely in line with J.R.Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood except instead of vampires, these rough and rugged hunks are cursed with demons living in them for eternity. Good writing and good beginning to a continuum of a story...definitely have a few demons I'd like to learn about...Promiscuity being one ;) Can't wait for the next book. Definitely a series I will read.

Gena Showalter is a genius. In her first installment of the Lords of The Underworld series, Maddox is possessed by the demon of violence. Cursed forever to relive the violence he exuded upon Pandora when him and his warrior companions decided to open the illustrious forbidden box.

I enjoyed this book, and am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
There is alot of information thrown at you in this book about how the Lords came to be and who they all are. You are introduced to so many characters and it can be overwhelming trying to remember them all, but it's well worth it if you stick with it.

I love Gena Showalter and this series does NOT disappoint at all! I can't wait to read the rest in this series! Highly recommend if you like the paranormal romance as well as Gena Showalter! I have yet to read one of her books that I haven't loved!

This book was AMAZING!! The characters were very passionate, strong, and courageous. The story was intense and dark but also hopeful and uplifting. I think this is one of the BEST books of this genre that I have ever read. I also really liked "The Nymph King" and intend to purchase every Gena Showalter book I can get my hands on!

This was my first Gena Showalter book and first romance novel that I have read. Let me just say that I really enjoyed this book, I love all of the characters in this book! I really like books that have gods and goddesses in them and that also talk about Pandora's box. I have already ordered the next two books and look forward to reading the whole series!

The Darkest Night is one of my favorite books to re-read. It combines a mythological world that is unique to the growing genre, sizzling sex that never ever gets old, and characters that continue to delight. Maddox and Ashlyn make a dynamite couple! Showalter was smart to start this series with such a compelling story line. If youre a fan of paranormal romance and you havent given The Lords of the Underworld a shot, what are you waiting for?!

This was such a good book. My first from this author and certainly not my last. I am a fan of J.R. Ward, and although similar you can't really compare. Maddox is such a tortured person that it takes one tough chick to help him from the hell he's in. I liked the premise of the characters and how they became the Lords of the Underworld. Again, I can't compare to J.R Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood because she is the queen of those characters but what I did like in GS stories and NOT in J.R.Ward is the there are no lessers here. Yes, the hunters are the "bad guys" in this book but they are not the only one's and I can feel there's more to the hunters here than the lessers in J.R.Ward's books. I already ordered book 2 and 3.
This book and author leaves me with mixed emotions. On one hand I really liked the story and the characters (well for the post part the characters were good) but the writing style (I thought) was horrible. There were scenes where they resorted to caveman talk, meaning there were sections where they were saying "Must use shower." or "Yes, want now." (I dont really like that). She also mixed in other characters so I wasnt really sure if the book was about Maddox or all of them. Im curious as to how the other ones play out and Im hoping that this was just her first book ever written and that her writing style gets better.
Can't wait for the next one to become available!
I thought this book was awesome. It had a little bit of romance, plus a little myth and supernatural. A great book to read.

This is a great read! The author brings a whole new look into immortals. After getting themselves cursed by Zeus for opening Pandora's box those present now house demons. What follows is is an adventure into what the immortal men think is the perfect life and what truly is. There is a lot of action and romance to keep you reading until the very end!

I normally don't read Showalter, but this is a good one. Don't expect too much depth but there IS something about a dark and deadly paranormal type guy. If you like J.R. Ward, you'll probably enjoy this series.

This book was recommend by a friend of mine and I thougt I would give it a try cause I hadn't read any books by this author. After I sat down and started readin it I ended up only getting four pages and I put it down and let it sit for a month. A week ago I decided I would make myself sit down and read more in it and boy was I ever glad that I did and I fell in love with the book! I can't wait to get the second one and start reading that!!

This book is about a group of fallen Greek warriers who betrayed a fellow warrier (Pandora) who was asked to guard the infamous box. For their betrayal, the evil inside the box was assigned to each warrier. So each warrier has an evil demon inside of them ranging from disease to violence to rage and so on.
I liked the concept the book but felt that it was unbelievable at times. Hard to put myself in the place of the woman in the story.
