So Oprah had a hissy fit over this book. So people were put off because of some alleged fictionalization of this story. Regardless, it is excellent reading, and the author either has done a tremendous amount of research into addiction and recovery, or experienced addiction and recovery to tell this chilling story. In all reality, when one tells their side of a story, who isn't tempted to expound upon the truth a bit? Embellishment makes for good story telling. The only difficulty I had with the story is that an addict as severe as Frey could gain and maintain sobriety in as short a time as six weeks.

An amazing novel. I wasn't interested in it until after the hype about the story being partially fiction. Even with that in mind, this book was excellent; one of the few life-changing novels I've read in my life.
Frey's writing makes him one of your family members or a close friend. You want him to succeed in sobering up and you hurt when he hurts.
Truly beautiful and incredibly sad, this novel will haunt you for a long time after you've read it.

Being the wife to an addict and alcoholic(10 years sober) I really enjoyed the book. I felt like it was something I needed to read. A great insite to what getting clean "feels like".
Fiction or non-fiction, it doesn't really metter, it's still a great story.

A really good book, even though all the stuff came out later on the Oprah show ,about it also being a little bit of fiction as well as a memoir of addiction, it was still a really good book. I really couldn't have cared less if it was real or fiction...it was a riveting realistic portrayal of addiction.

This book took quite a while to suffer through. The repetition used for effect got old, pretty fast, and while a few parts of the book towards the middle and end are underline worthy (literary lines of brilliance), the book on the whole fails to inspire the reader, or leave them with a feeling of importance ("now that was a story worth telling!")...I felt as though I'd wasted half my week trying to sit through this novel. The fact that it's mostly false doesn't help either. The lack of style in writing can't make this story stand on it's own as a fictional piece of work. I can excuse stories that are embellished, but only if they're good books in the end.
Also, I've read stories of addiction before, and I know recovering addicts...James seems a bit too compliant with the clinic at first. In the first couple weeks his character is already talking about this rehab being a good thing. Addicts are reluctant. It's just fact. They want their drugs--- they need them, and they'll do anything to get out of clinic.
Overall...
2 stars out of 5.

This book isn't at all what Oprah claimed it to be....I never finished it. It is just garbage. He just uses this book as a platform to have an excuse to use expletives repeatedly and be completely a fool. You can tell it isn't a memoir....it is just overly exaggerated....overly everything. I work with at-risk, drug/alcoholic people. None of which are over the top like Mr. Frey.

Ok, I'll be honest. On one hand, James Frey has an interesting writing style, and he probably COULD write a good story. The problem is that when I read it, I couldn't believe that ANYONE ever bought any part of the story. Anyone who has any experience with any kind of rehab or rehab facility will know instantly that Frey's work is purely fiction. I have been a counselor, and no counselor, particulary one at "the famous rehab facility in Minnesota (I'm thinking Hazelden)" with the highest success rate of any facility, would bend to a patient's wishes and attitude the way Frey's did. I mean, geez, they helped him break one of the most important rules of the facility? I don't think so. He said he could do it without the twelve steps, and they agreed? That just doesn't happen. I also had a lot of trouble accepting his accounts of his medical trials - even alcoholics and addicts are allowed novacaine, for heaven's sake. They are not allowed ADDICTIVE drugs. In the end, I disliked not only the book, but also the author.

I read this years before Oprah found it, Yes I win!!!!!!!!! I thought it was frankly the worst book that I have ever read. It goes on and on, you care nothign for the narrator the book is real hard to swallow i.e. he gets like 6 root canals w/o meds, he kills a cop? ruins his teacher creadit report for life after she gives him a bad grade etc. I could go on. Don't read this, although in hindsight, now that it is proven fake, it may be quite funny.

While it' pretty clear that a lot of what this guy describes in the book never happened (dental surgery without anesthesia? PuhLEEZ!), still there's some of the most descriptive writing I've evr read. Damn fine writing in it at times.
Other times you just want to guy ol' Jim an "attitude adjustment" because he is clearly a sociopath and a narcissist, if what he describes in interactions with others is true. With his attitude, there's no way he's going to stay clean and sober for long.
Still, I think the book is well written and made me feel his pain (if he had any)!

To be honest, I didn't finish this book. I got about halfway through and quit reading it. I found the style of writing to be very annoying, and the story was not the least bit captivating for me. I don't get what all the hype about this book was.

I was really looking forward to reading this book, but I felt that it fell short of my expectations. I was unable to connect with the character and was frustrated with the looming yet lacking climax. I didn't actually finish the book because of this. Maybe you will have better luck!! Oprah obviously loved it (haha).

A best seller that got a lot of flack after it became known that Frey did not have all the experiences her claimed to have had. Despite that, a good read.
Helpful Score: 5
Despite the contraversy (that a few details were changed for dramatic effect) the book is very good. It's interesting & I think it gives a good insight into drug rehab. It reads like a journal and a novel, but is all rooted in his experiences recovering from multiple substances.
Helpful Score: 5
This is the book about treatment for drug addiction which became controversial because Oprah picked it for her book club and then it was later revealed that the author had misrepresented that he experienced everything as written in the book. This is a shame because it is a very well written book--the author's power of description is very good. He should have just said that it was a work of fiction based loosely on his own experience with drug addition and treatment and there wouldn't have been a controversy. His mistake, I believe, was in representing it as autobiographical.
Helpful Score: 5
Unfortunately for James Frey, he portrayed this story as a autobiography. Regardless of whether the story is an autobiography or fiction based on his life, it is a great read. The story goes quickly. I enjoyed James style of story telling, using short to the point sentences. The story is great and the characters are well developed. Forgive him for lying and read the book as a fictional story. You'll still enjoy it.

I don't care that part of this book was enhanced or fabricated -- call it poetic's license. This memoir is touching, raw, real. It's written in a way that gets under your skin and allows the reader to feel more from the text. I'm excited to read Frey's other book after reading this one.

It took me a while to get into this book. It is very very very graphic, and is hard to feel what he is feeling if you cannot relate to the character. I enjoyed the book, but a little bit overwhelming for me

The lack of grammar made for a difficult read, but added to the effect of the book. Despite the controversy surrounding the author and his truthfulness, he tells his truth of the experience.

When I first read this book I was in total love with Frey's harrowing descriptions of addiction and its impact on his life at such an early age. I loved his use of language and omission of punctuation and felt he had truly broken new ground in the literary memoir category. However, it has now come out that much of the "facts" of the book are not really true and that Frey himself is somewhat of a jerk. But whatever you believe it is well worth a look.

A unique memoir. Although I have read that some are trying to discredit some parts of it, I do not believe that the small part in dispute takes anything away from the meat of the message or his story.
Although I do not think many people of the 12-step persuasion would think too much of his unorthodox philosophy, I found it to be refreshingly "in-your-face" toward those who play the blame game so easily for the mistakes they've made.

At first I was turned off by this book's small print and lack of standard formatting and punctuation. After the first dozen or so pages, I got past it and fell into the story. Websites like TheSmokingGun claim that James Frey snowed readers (even Oprah), but I would argue that if you read it for the content and can take anything away, then it is enthralling and even potentially helpful if you struggle with any type of addiction. It is certainly worth a read.

James Frey brings us into the world of recovering addics of all types. After hitting bottom both literally and figuratively, James is checked into a residential drug and alcohol treatment facility with a reputation of being able to help addics dry out or detox and return to the outside world. Through out the book, we meet many characters and become familiar with their difficultis. At the end of the book there is a list of characters and what happened to them once they left the clinic. After reading this book I feel I have a better understanding of what addics go through as an abuser and during recovery.
Helpful Score: 4
I didn't believe a word of it. I thought the author seemed more interested in cultivating a "tough guy" image for himself than in telling a story that rang true, which is why he needed to fabricate so much of it.

Don't bother if you have any medical background. The beginning of the book is so fraught with inaccuracies and things that couldn't possily be true that I had to put it down. I think if you approach this book like it is fiction, it is easier to read. Wel later learned it is at least in part "fiction" - some of the crazy stuff that happened to the author leaves you to think either 1. it's plain unbelieveable, or 2. he was too high to have remembered things so detailed.

This book was about a man who nearly died from using drugs. He was admitted to a rehab home in which he went through griming days of withdrawal. The language is foul but if you can deal with that, you would like this book. It is very realistic based on the rehab days of this man and the trials and tribulations. It depicts his life after he became clean. He appeared on the Oprah show. It is fairly fast=reading.

I read Beautiful Boy and Tweak before reading A Million Little Pieces. James Frey's book is the best most easily identifiable book I've read about the subject of addiction. I too am not a believer in AA or The 12 Steps. Not because of lack of faith in God or a Higher Power but because I too believe that alcoholism is a weakness and is NOT a disease. Alcoholism is simply in Frey's case and in my own life a case of mind over matter. Mr. Frey made his mind up not to take another drink or to use drugs. I made the same deal with myself regarding alcohol. This book will remain a permanent part of my collection. I would recommend it to anyone with an addiction problem and to families of addicts. I am so glad I read this book!

I read it because I wanted to see what the hoopla was about it being fabricated. I find it extremely hard to believe someone read it and felt it was all factual as there are several bits that are easy to pick out as being colorful exaggeration. I think it makes it a better story to show how messed up the head can be of an addict and why it is such a dangerous disease that plagues so many. I thought it was a very good read.

I went into this book knowing that it was a nonfiction memoir filled with fabrications and falsehoods... but I read it as if it were real, and I cried with full of emotion moments and I felt for all of the characters and I felt it did exactly what it books are supposed to do - touch people.

I couldn't put this book down, but the revelation that this was NOT a memoir as advertised, but instead more of a novel tempered some of the scenes. This is fiction at it finest. I can not imagine even before the scandal, that professional and those who have been in rehab did not call Mr. Frey to task for this book on fansty.
What was Oprah thinking?!?!
I had a really hard time with the writting style and just the story line in general, not to mention the belivablity of subject.
However, I will grant, not everyone what wittness a rehab center or known a addict, or those who working in the helping fields. So I cut some slack there.
However the hardest part for me to read was him getting his teeth fixed w/o a local. That would NEVER happen.
Also him throwing up every day and not getting medical help about it, nope, that would not happen either, esp if there was blood. That is a dangerous medical conditon.
I have yet to know anyone who can throw up their stomach and live either, even chunks of it, as he claims in his book.

What can I say about this book that hasn't already been said? In spite of Frey's fabrications, I still was glad to read it. If even half of the picture he painted was true, the book gives an in-depth, highly disturbing look at the life of an addict.
Helpful Score: 3
Despite all the controversy, I enjoyed the book. My major complaint is that the author's rhythm goes from a spoken word poetry sound to an abruptly different narrative throughout. So there are parts that flow with that spoken word feeling and there are parts where the flow matches a typical novel, but the switching between the two forced me to read at a much slower pace. I don't know if this will even make sense to anyone, but that's the only way I can describe it. :) Overall, I thought it was a very interesting read.

I was horribly disappointed at the lie of this book. I think having gone into the book, knowing it was fiction....I would have enjoyed it a lot more, (perhaps not as much knowing the whole book was not true)....addiction, in my opinion is a huge problem in this country....so to take it lightly, make money off of a book really frustrated me.

This book was great. It's common that "true stories"- in books and movies alike-- are BASED on true stories, not every single word is fact. Who cares if he embellished a bit, it's still a great book, and it's still based on his experiences. I read this when I was still early in my recovery from drugs and alcohol, and the book helped me alot. It wasn't far fetched at all. Maybe his situations weren't as extreme as he said they were, but they were for somebody out there. And maybe they were more extreme for him when he lived them than they would be in retrospect. Who doesn't embellish stories as they tell them? Everyone has, so give the guy some slack.
And to whoever said that they work with at rish drug/alchol abusers and they are not over the top like James was-- Drug addicts and alcoholics are all drama, and completely over the top. Otherwise it wouldn't be such an issue. I can't imagine who you actually work with.
Nothing personal, just saying.
I would definately recommend this book.

I think this book gives the reader a personal experience of having a relationship with an addict. They lie. They make you believe them and feel for them and then you find out they manipulated you. I not certain of any claim in this book except for the one that Mr. Frey is an addict. Clearly his recovery, if he had one from actual drugs and alcohol, did not cure him of his adictive behavior. That said, the experience of reading this book before learning that it wasn't true and then discovering the facts is exactly the experience of caring for an addict. For that experience alone it is worth reading, especially if you can let yourself believe him still and then imagine discovering the fraud. I'm not sure it is worth the read as fiction.

Considering James Frey did not go through that experience, he did an excellent job of writing about it. It was first tried to be published as fiction, but it was turned down. Only when submitted as non-fiction was it published. Instead of making a big deal that many details were false, why can't we look at ourselves and question why it didn't make it as fiction.

I loved this book! The raw emotion is enough to make you cry. Mr Frey is an excellent author!

A brilliantly painted picture of drug addiction. Difficult words to read, yet even more difficult to not read. I loved it and hated it. I'll never forget it or the man who survived it.

When http://www.thesmokinggun.com reported that this "memoir" is more fiction than fact, I thought Frey was a tool. But after reading this book I have to say the man can tell a story and I like his voice.
There are no quotemarks and no paragraph indents, which takes some getting used to. The thing that bugs me, though, is the capitalization. His style is that all people (except man, woman & friend) & places (plus some words relating to treatment) are capitalized, but it's inconsistent, which really slows my eye.

This is the best book I have ever read, hands down. Frey ropes you in with his words and descriptions of his time in rehab. You can feel the emotions he was dealing with throughout the entire story. You will be laughing, crying, fighting for him til the end.

It started out intense and riveting. But by the middle of the book, I was just plain tired of the cheesy, the bitchy, and the overly-dramatic tone the author took on. I can understand artistic license, but on some of these scenes, I couldn't believe he didn't insert a dun-dun-DUN somewhere. And the character James portrays himself as is oddly unrealistic as well: from callous and unfeeling one minute, to a big ball of sensitivity the next without even blinking. To be quite frank, there were moments /I/ couldn't stand his teenage-rebellion style refusal to follow anyone's rules or advice. But of course, unfailingly, something happens immediately afterward to portray him as a saintly hero.
Don't get me wrong. I appreciate the author's plight against his addiction, and his desire to share it with others. What I don't appreciate, is the soap-opera he turned his memoir into and the rediculous turns it takes from reality.

As a recovering crack cocaine and alcoholic myself this book was very inspiring to me. This is how the true struggle of an addict on the road to recovery is...even if the book is made up a little bit here & there, who cares, it's a good book. I think with how he wrote this book, and how closely it resembles the real life struggles of an addict that he is also a recovering addict, you can't make this stuff up if you truly don't know what the road to recovery is like first hand. It is so much more than "will power." There is no such thing as will-power for the addict's brain (any drug counselor and addict will tell you that). It made me realize there are others out there with the same struggles. Our lives may be vastly different but the recovery process is the same for most addicts. We hear the same evil voices in our heads telling us "It's ok, do some more drugs, have another drink." "One more won't hurt." "It's fun." "You can always stop." "You need me." This book is a must read.

Though it is now considered a work of fiction, this book describes a very real situation which many face every day. Addiction shows its' very ugly face all throughout the book with the narrator's flashbacks and his thoughts show just how deep in one's mind the need for drugs roots itself. The body no longer craves the drug as a desire, but as a necessity to function. It is sad to see just how low the narrator has fallen within the first pages, but he engages the reader with every detail he spills. One grows to cheer for the narrator and want to see him succeed because of how genuinely human he truly is. A good read about someone who gets in over his head, falls, and pulls himself up with arrogance that hides true feelings of guilt and self hatred. How does one grow to love oneself, or begin to tolerate oneself?..

Who made her queen? Loved the book! Especially loved Leonard and the fact that his character became a sequel. "My Friend Leonard" another must read.
Helpful Score: 2
Oprah recommended this book and I read it right away. I LOVED IT. Putting the controversy aside, I was hook from the first to last sentence. So much that I had to buy the second book: My friend Leonard.

Okay - during the part when the dentist was drilling w/o novicane...I started to wonder if this could really be true. Yeah...turns out it wasn't - but Frey is an amazing writer regardless. I like his style. It's something different, and I still devoured this book. It was fun believing it was true before the whole Oprah scandal...but I think if I had read it after finding out it was fictional, I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much. I also really liked My Friend Leonard & Bright Shiny Morning.

I didn't love this but I found myself routing for James to get better. I was actually touched at some of the raw honest moments with his parents. However, under normal circumstances, not a book I would read. The contraversy over the book is what swayed me to read it.

I read this book knowing that it wasnt actually based on his life and after the whole Oprah blow out so I knew kinda what I was going into. I did actually find this to be very interesting. I gets a little graphic for me at times but still extreamly interesting and well written

I started reading this book before all the controversy...and I'm glad I did because I was so arrested by the book by the time all the "truth" came out, I ended up not caring what was true and what was not. It's a great story no matter how you look at it.
Helpful Score: 2
Although the way this book was written made it a bit of a hard read, it was highly enjoyable. There was really no point when I wanted to put the book down. I had become attached to the author's life, and cannot wait to read the second book.
Helpful Score: 2
Oprah took a big leap of faith putting hetr name on this book. I could not make it past page 176. I did not like the way the book was written and I thought the context was redundant. Although I am curious to know what made him turn his life around, I can't seem to make myself finish.
Helpful Score: 2
Even though this got alot of bad press, the book was very good. I could tell right away that it wasn't all true, however, it is interesting.
I loved this book. It was one of the most engrossing books I've ever read. I avoided reading it for so many years because of the Oprah scandal, where it was uncovered that a lot of "facts" in this book are untrue. However, I am glad I finally took the time to go back and read it. Who cares if it's real, it's an awesome book about overcoming addiction and a great story! However, I must caution you: if you are offended by profanity (especially the "F" word) or gory details about bodily functions, this is not the book for you! There was also a scene about rape that was very disturbing.

I loved it before I found out he was a phony. It's a page truned and had me hooked. I liked it less when I learned so much of it was untrue, that's why I gave it 2.5 stars.

This book is about a 23-old-man that is told if he does not stop using drugs and alcohol, he will be dead, that he will not live another year. He goes to live in a rehab center, and details his struggles with his body, thoughts and philosophy. At first, he vomits a lot, and the physical state of his body is not a pretty picture. But gradually, he changes, he forgives parents, falls in love with another person at the clinic, and takes responsibility for his actions. It is a graphic picture of the inner workings of a rehab center. According to the back of the book, it is a true story. I was suprised by the statistic that only 17% of addicts do not relapse, and begin to use again.

I enjoyed this book despite all the controversy over the correct category of literature it should be classifed. Fast and easy read.

Still worth a read after all the controversy, but now you can read this as the exaggerated story of a recovering drug addict. It is gripping and unbelievable, and a good book for reading groups because you can read all the smokinggun.com articles about James Frey.

Yes, it was proved to be somewhat falsified information. But it's still a compelling story of a drug addicts recovery.

Yeah he made it up but who cares! If it is a good book that is all that should matter. It is about addiction and sobriety. I imagine most biographies are a little fiction! I say read the book and make your own oppinion of it! Enjoy. Another biography that my have a little fiction, called Tweak by Nic Sheff. I think these are both very similar. Some find this story hard to read though. Read it then post what you think of the book! You may just change someones mind!

I read this before all the publicity about the book. However, I still thought it was a good story and enjoyed reading it.

I read this book, I thought it was wonderful, I ran right out and bought the Sequel THE VERY SAME DAY, USA today had a front page article that this story was all a lie. I would have read it and loved it if it had NOT been called a memoir. I do not know why he felt compelled to be misleading. I tried to look past all the drama and read the sequel I had purchased, but was unable to finish it. It felt dirty, fake and I was really irritated.

Despite Oprah's later bashing of the book, it was still a good read and very interesting!
I loved this book. Completely true or not, it brought me through a full range of emotions: empathy, anger, pity, sadness, happiness...it was a great read.
Helpful Score: 1
A very interesting read despite the fact that the author was exposed as faving fabricated many events included in his "memoirs".

I read this book after the whole Oprah fiasco simply because family members recommeded it as an exceptional story of drug addiction. I found it hard to relate to and it was one of my least favorite books. Maybe if I had "been there" and gone through similar situations it would have been more enjoyable.

The book was incredible granted I never struggled with addiction like the Author did. I do remember vividly the line 'warm peppermint honey' in my days of crack smoking the flavor/smell to this day I can smell it a mile away and it makes me smile. No not because of the drug itself for I never had any real addiction to it but because a book made me identify what I was trying to find for myself.
It was a great book I don't care if there was controversy over it. Amazing. The struggle an addict of any kind will, and has went through!

This was a great read wether it was fiction or not. James Frey must have experienced addiction in some way in order to convey this addict's experience.
Helpful Score: 1
I was spellbound by this book and rooted for him all the way. Then I found out that the book was in fact a work of fiction and not a life story as I first believed. Fortunately I had finished it and felt only mildly let down. It is still a good read and I believe I would have enjoyed it nearly as much had I known the truth all along. Shame on Frey.

Helpful Score: 1
Marginal....A little over the top... once I found out that the "memoir" was embellished it lost all credibility with me....

This book provided an interesting insight into an addicts thought process. While it was later said that this wasn't a result of true life experience, I believe that he knows something more than those never exposed to addiction or rehab.

This book journeys through the author's time in rehab, although it has come to light that he may have overstated some of it...it is still a very good book, true or not.

A memoir chronicaling James Frey's recovery from drugs. Caused quite a controversy last year as it was revealed that he "made up" or exaggerated parts of his history. Still, a good read.

Even though this is not a "true" story, it is a great story. You should read it if you are looking for a great story to read and not an autobiography.

I actually liked this book. I didn't buy it until all of the controversy stirred up, but fake or not, it's a very interesting read.
Helpful Score: 1
Thought this was a great read. Lost some of its luster when Frey admitted it had a lot of fictionalized segments.
Helpful Score: 1
I have up on page 40 because it felt like I was watching grass grow. I don't see how this is "ripping, gripping." I did not understand the necessity of the author capitalizing/making pronouns words such as "room" and "nurse" at every mention. The concept of the story seems good, but how he lays it out seems too much. Every waking moment is included in this "memoir," which I thought was not necessary to write the story. One could probably find a better author for this same plot.

I think knowing the falsification of the facts ruined the experience of reading this book for me. Initially, before I knew the full detail of the fabrications it seemed a very powerful and stunningly graphic memoir. However, knowing that it is fiction makes it what it really is . . . a rather poorly written and unnecessarily gross recounting of events that never took place

Despite all of the uproar, I loved this book! Every teenager in America should have to read this book - it will scare them away from drugs!

Whether it's all true or not, fascinating reading.

highly readable, but after his appearance on Oprah, I felt kind of cheated.

GREAT BOOK about someone going thru recovery

A compelling read...tough to imagine living through an experience like that...if even parts of it are true!

Enjoyed it immensely.

Hated it - it read as false. Some of the events just were so unreal - I was surprised anyone believed him from the begining. Don't waste your time.

I really enjoyed this book despite the recent announcement that it is not entirely truthfull. The language is a little juvenile and crude but I found that I could not put it down.

This book turned a page in my personal history, and I recommend it as a read if going into the field of therapy or if you're stuck with a substance problem..really this book can be read anytime, but its written true and close to the heart and experience of the drama that surrounds kicking a habit.

Pretty good book about a drug addict and his time in rehab.

Excellent book!, yes, I know parts of it were made up but it's still a great read and an amazing look into the brain of an addict.

My friends raved about this book, but I thought it was just OK.

Very good book, though may not be totally a true story.

I enjoyed the story. It was difficult at times to get past the language, but well written.

Great writing. Horrible story and ideology.

This book is very graphic about the aspects of overcoming addiction. It is well worth your time to read, but just make sure you can handle the details. When I got this book I didn't realize that is was so controversial. Eight days after being listed as an Oprah's Book Club book, it was uncovered that some of the material is fabricated, though much of the essential details are the same. I think Oprah may have been too hard on Frey, but I guess it is helping the novel to sell....
Helpful Score: 1
Powerful...but not as powerful as it would have been if it were all true.

This is a wonderful memoir by James Frey. This is a true story of one man's fight to overcome drug & alcohol abuse. This is a MUST READ!!
Helpful Score: 1
Very enjoyable. Even with all the doubts out there about it being a true story. It is still very interesting..

Even with the controversy, I think the message of this book is still very inspiring.

The book was very well written and interesting. This book was also a very fast read.

I really enjoyed this book alot. With the whole Oprah scandal and everything it made me wonder how much of it was real or made up, but I still really enjoyed it.
Helpful Score: 1
I read this a few months before the scandal broke. I hardly agree with the author that the embellishments were minor. I do see why Oprah chose it - it is a very motivating piece about how one man reclaimed his life from his destructive habits - empowering for anyone who struggles with any sort of addition or destructive cycle. Also written in a very unique style. Given what we know now, I feel it does diminish the power of the book to some extent, but still worthwhile.

I loved this book!!! Despite all the hoopla it's a great read.

very good, well written even if it was "embellished"
i loved this book. i read it before he admitted some/a lot of it was made up, still a very good read. i'd recomend it to everyone.
Helpful Score: 1
Very good book. Offers a profound insight into what an addict goes through in recovery. Intriguing look into the mind and thought process it takes to quit.
Helpful Score: 1
This is a very good story despite the big to do over what was true and what wasn't.
Fast read - disappointing to find out that it may be all lies
I'd heard a lot about this book when it first came out, telling a very true-to-life story of a recovering addict. Then it was found that it was a complete hoax. I wanted to learn for myself what was so true-to-life about it. The sentence structure was different, so it took a bit to get used to it. It was pretty graphic and a few times I had to skip the section I was reading to keep from gagging! It was interesting to read what may go on in an addict's mind as they go through the process of detox.
Could not get interested in it.
Great strange read. Once I found out that James Frey wrote the entire book as fiction , it was a complete turn off.
= I quit reading it. I feel bad about it, but its not not my type of book I guess.
An interesting read despite (or maybe because of) all the controversy.
I read this book only AFTER i found out the author was a "fraud" and the story fictional. i good read.
This book kept my interest the entire way through. Some pretty gross images, but a very fascinating read. I'd like to read the sequel.
I enjoyed James Frey's outlook on sobriety... I have been through a lot with my sons father going in and out of rehab and this was a great book for me to get better insight on how hard it really is to make it through... It was also a great gift for him to read while he is in rehab
Regardless if some of this book wasn't factual, it was his experience which may be altered from another's experience of the same situation. It is well-written and gives the reader an experience rather than a "read." This is a tough challenge with the written word, and Frey delivers. See what you think...
Still a good read even if it's really fiction.
I thought this was an excellent book and it didn't make any difference at all whether it was his accurate story or not, it was a good story. I liked how the writing is all fragmented and disjointed in the beginning and slowly gets more proper as he makes progress, I thought that was a little touch of genius. I think his portrayal was accurate and either he was an addict at some point or he researched them well because it can easily get that bad. It was a little too complimentary to the narrator in a few spots, he always seems to do the right thing or be on the correct side, but I knew before reading it was fictional so it was ok. While finding out what happened to his friends depressed me I know it was accurate with the crappy success rates rehab and AA have. I can't imagine a rehab facility allowing someone as much freedom to customize their treatment as much as he did, that was a stretch for me. But again, I knew it was fiction. It's a compelling book and it is full of bad language and worse situations but if you pick up the memoir of a heroin addict and don't expect that then I just don't know what to tell you.
Sorry, not my cup of tea.. Tedious one line conversations that seem to go on forever. I got that he doesn't believe in God or a higher power, I can respect that. I have about 10 more pages to finish the book & I can't wait.

I really did enjoy the book. I think it gave an accurate picture of treatment. I have had experience with the Twelve Steps and other issues in the book, but I have never been subjected to in-patient treatment. I think it gave an accurate portrayal of the problems of coping with addiction. I am a little suspect of the ending and thus leads a little bit more to the controversy that this book later encountered for many of the tales being pure fabrications. Nonetheless, it is a good read about the cycle of addiction and one indivdiuals stuggle to free himself from its bonds.
A very disturbing book about addiction.
Beware the foul language!!
Beware the foul language!!
Was hard to believe to begin with, never mind the controversy after. good piece of fiction
A bunch of crap. All lies. Don't waste your time being sucked into this.
I found it to be a real page turner, despite all the controversy about his imbellishments.
This book is very gory at times but I couldn't put it down!
How an "author" can bore the reader with a subject matter as intriguing, emotional, and disturbing as drug abuse and mental illness I haven't a clue but James Frey, or his editor, seems to have accomplished this flawlessly.
Why even bother publishing under the theme of memoir? Fiction or recollection this story is laughable at best. If you can manage the awkward unnatural dialogue, poor redundant sentence structure, basically poor writing in general, I'd recommend the book that pokes fun at this atrocious story.

I ate this book up word for word. Loved every paragraph. It is compelling! I have never read a book where I find myself having to take a breather to compose myself between thoughts!
This was a good book. The ups and downs the guy goes through your heart really goes out to him. The struggles he faces his compelling and the outcome of his story is wonderful. To bad though he lied and made it all up and it wasnt a true story like he had originally set out and said it was. But if you can put that behind you, this is a good read.
This book is very good when you're in a "dark" mood. Very insightful in the mind of an addict.
Intense. Is the only word I can use to describe this book. Its a good intense read.
Insane story, it would be easy to guess that this would be fiction. Although it is well written and very shocking it is amazing how it brings to reality the trials some people have in their lives. I enjoyed it as a book to pass the time, but I could see it being beneficial to someone struggling with addiction or abuse issues as well.
I love this book. It kept my interest. I didn't like the protagonist, but I don't think you're supposed too. He does change, but not as much as you might like. It was an entertaining story though.
for this style of writing - no punctuation and run on sentences - this book read very fast. It was the honest story of a man addicted.
This book is so gripping and awesome-I can't put it down. He writes in a way that makes me feel I'm right there with him, living through this hell too! I highly recommend reading this book. Be careful though-it's graphic.
Despite the controversy I felt it was a great account of addiction and recovery
Difficult to read and follow along. Not what I expected.
I really enjoyed this book...okay, so he embellished a little. He said he wishes that he were that tough person he portrayed in the book, but he's not. Still, this is a very real look at what it's like to be on a rehab ward. I speak from experience and people can do amazing things when they set their minds to it. An addiction is an addiction and the way he fights his initial shock of being placed in rehab to the final result...as a writer, I applaud James Frey. The biggest thing that they were fighting over was whether he had his teeth done without any painkiller. He says he has proof that they did...who really cares. It was a good read.
OMG what a book! This was such a gruesome, honest, and compelling book. I now have some understanding of the struggles an addict or alcoholic must face. I commend Mr. Frey for his brutal honesty and applaud him for his sobriety. Do not miss reading this book!
This guy lied about everything in this book! I saw on smoking gun.com, this guy was never held for more than 5 hours, and his "high school girlfriend" who died by train, barely knew him and was not with him the night she died. This guy is a fraud!
This book is not worth the time or effort. The way in which the book is written is annoying and difficult to read. It was an okay book, but it was extremely hard to finish because it dragged on for what seems forever. After I finished reading the book, I looked up what aspects of the book were fabricated (i.e. the Oprah scandal!) What I learned was that basically he fabricated most of the major framework in the novel.
NOT WORTH READING.
NOT WORTH READING.
I dont care about all the drama Oprah tried to stir up around this book. I enjoyed it, i felt like i was getting a peek into an addict's head and that was so interesting to me. I think James Frey is a fantastic author with a singular voice, that I was moved by, isnt that what you want in a book? I am looking forward to reading 'My Friend Leonard' which is the follow up to this.
In spite of the controversy, a very good read.
Still a great story, even after the controversy. Reading it as a fiction rather than a non-fiction makes it super enjoyable and interested to read. Great characters and a great story.
Did not like the book. Really depressing!!
Not withstanding all the controversy, great book.
Regardless of the controversy surrounding the fact or not of the details of this book, it was an excellent account of an addict's struggles and I applaud James Frey for telling this story! Sometimes very painful to read, it is a powerful book!
This had to be one of the most pointless books I think I've ever read. An absolute waste of time.
Just wasn't my cup of tea. Maybe some other year. Has a lot of bad language.
I know little about the controversy surrounding the author and whether some parts of this book are really true. Too me, it doesnt matter. This was a well-written, emotional, heartfelt book. And even if ½ is true, I dont care. I still liked it. The book is about Frey and his time in rehab. It talks about how he dealt with it, how he related to his family and the friends he met while he was there. He also relived his horrible nightmare as an addict. IT kept my attention from beginning to end. I am heading over to my wish list to add Freys other book.
This book was a page turner! It took you inside his world and it was very detailed to the point you could feel what it was like for him! Great book!
I really enjoyed this book, even if most of it was a lie.
This was a very good book about a strong drug addiction. It tells his life story and his troubles and his rehabilitation. This story shows that no matter what the situation, any type of person can get through it if he or she is strong enough. This book definitely changed my overall opinion about drug abuse and see if I ever do it myself. I recommend this for high school students to really show them how messed up life can really get if you are a drug abuser/alcoholic.
James Frey's memoir is quite a story, made even more interesting by his Oprah show interview and the controversy that followed. Even if the details are "as he remembered them", the ride through rehab makes you want to cheer his triumph.
This author is a fraud! Frey first attempted to have this book published years previously as FICTION and it didn't fly. Years later, he re-releases it as non-fiction. What a creep. His ascertations in the book have been investigated and proven to be FICTION! The story may be great, but the author is a fraud and thus loses credibility with many, some of who may have been inspired otherwise. Too bad!
I loved this book could not sit it down.
Good book, a little hard to follow at times (almost like a child was trying to write an adult book) but you can get a feel for what he was going through at the time.
Very good and insightful look into a troublesome way of life.
This book is a very thought provoking book. I really enjoyed it, even if it isn't all true. It tells what some people go through and what they lose because of addictions.
A brutally honest account of drug and alcohol addicton recovery. National Bestseller. I recommend it.
had this book forever on my wish list. it was worth the wait.i couldn't hardly put it down
Although we now know parts of the book are not autobiographical - the story telling is still very interesting... does paint a rather visceral account of the ugly bits of addiction. Worth the read.
Got the first glance at A Million Little Pieces on the Oprah Show read it in two nights! A man at the end of his rope from all the booze, drugs and trouble he has been in until this writing! Supposedly this is a true story, but now hear that parts of this book is fiction?
I had read this book before the author came out and said not all of it was true, so I was a bit disappointed to learn that it was not a completely true story as he had said, but it is a very good read.
Wow Intense...Having never stuggled with any type of addiction this was an eye-opener.
I don't care that this book was partially based on real-life experiences and parts were fabricated. It was still a very good read. Extremely engaging and you find yourself rooting for people.
and now, of course, some are saying parts of the book may have been fabricated... however, fabricated or not, the content is telling and one can only imagine that getting out of an addiction so severe could be no less than the descriptions included here.
Loved reading this story dispite the backlash it recieved.
Augusten Burroughs book Dry, is a better book, and better written.
A big part of the power of this book was the idea that it was a true memoir. It has been revealed that large parts were fabricated, and that diminishes the impact of the story, and kind of leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

couldn't finish this book, he has obviously been an addict and gone through treatment because he got a lot of the feelings dead on, but some of the book was just so cheesy i couldn't stomach it.
I thought this was very gritty and well written. I don't much care about all the controversy over the Memoir/Poetic License issue. It was still a good read.
I read it after the "scandal" came out so the true story part was ruined for me, but it is still a very good book. It's really graphic about drug use and life on the street, and can be a little gross at times. It also has alot of bad language. Fair warning - do not read this book if any of those things bother you!
loved this book...raw and finally, an accurate, not sugar coated, recovery story.
I read this book after all the hoop-la on Oprah, so I went in to this book knowing parts were embellished. I thought it was very well written. I have never read a book quite like it, it was the hardest and easiest book I have read. Descrepencies or not, I believe the heart of the addiction struggle rings true.
I felt that this book was pretty amazing. I loved Mr. Frey's writing style and how he was able to captivate me from the very beginning. I also enjoyed how we as an audience were able to see him grow and change though out the book. However, above all, I really enjoyed his philosophy on addiction and the Twelve Step program. It brings an option to those who do not wish the follow the norm.
I loved this book. It matters not if it is truth or fiction. The story told by James Frey is an important one that after reading makes me feel just a bit more human. If you've had a hard life, you will appreciate this book. If you've had an easy life, this book will show you how difficult life can be. This book should be required reading for all junior high English classes.
A very hard book to read. The destruction and wasted lives of substances abuse are hard to comprehend. He was able to stop and gain control of his life without using the 12 steps of AA, but he is a man with unbelievalbe control. It will make you glad your now addicted to anything.
I had only read a few chapters, when I saw on Oprah that the author had lied about certain instance's in the book. It was released as non-fiction and now is listed as fiction. I think that Oprah or her staff should have checked this author out more throughly before adding it to Oprah's Book Club suggestion! Of course after tons of people buy the book, we now find out it is a fraud. Poor judgement on Oprah's part. She should offer all of us a refund.
Addiction and recovery; what has changed in 20 years time? This gripping memoir is a bare bones rehersal of cause and effect, trials and failures, expectations and a grasping for any form of hope.
You know what? I don't care about the big stink over whether every freakin fact is accurate or not (although OKAY, he lied about a lot, LOL). it's such a great book. I think it stands on its own, so if it makes you feel betetr cross out memoir and write novel and be done with it. (Why he didn't do that in the first place is beyond me. He could say like, "based" on my life. Duh.)
A story of one man's addiction, painfully honest. "The War and Piece of addiction. One of Oprah's book picks.
I have picked this book up several times in the bookstore only to put it back on the shelf. I realize it is on "Oprah's Book Club" list and has rave reviews. I just wasn't sure if I wanted to read about someone else's addiction.
I had my own addiction 20+ years ago and can relate to a lot of what James experiences. Thank the gods I never got into crack. This book made me laugh out loud, cry (several times) and the fury raged at times, relating to circumstances and characters in the book. It is a well written story of a young mans journey through drug addiction and rehab. Written almost like a journal as you follow him daily through his experiences.
In the end I am glad I had the opportunity to read this book and thank James for this sharing his life so candidly, it took great bravery to do so.

A inspiring book about drug addiction & how one person overcame it & saved his life & sanity. An Oprah book club selection.
It took a while for me to get into it but once I did,I really enjoyed it
I just wish it was all true.
controversial I guess, but still a good read
I found the character arrogant, unappreciative and insincere. Couldn't finish the book knowing he was trying to base this character on himself.
Good book, very intense.
Great Book!
I just can't get into this book especially knowing that the author embellished on so many levels. I feel the publisher handled the controversy well, but I still don't have the interest to complete it. I've had it sitting on my bookshelf a very long time, and finally decided to read it or post, and I believe this is the first time I have not finished a book. Waste of my time!
Gritty account of recovery from drug and alcholol abuse. Originally published as a true story, but later found out to contain lots of fiction. I wasn't impressed.
Loved it despite the controversy!
James Frey's debut memoir, cuts to the then 23-year-old author on a Chicago-bound plane "covered with a colorful mixture of spit, snot, urine, vomit and blood." Wanted by authorities in three states, without ID or any money, his face mangled and missing four front teeth, Frey is on a steep descent from a dark marathon of drug abuse.
One of the more harrowing sections is when Frey submits to major dental surgery without the benefit of anesthesia or painkillers (he fights the mind-blowing waves of "bayonet" pain by digging his fingers into two old tennis balls until his nails crack). His fellow patients include a damaged crack addict with whom Frey wades into an ill-fated relationship, a federal judge.
The rage-fueled memoir is kept in check by Frey's cool, minimalist style. Like his steady mantra, "I am an Alcoholic and I am a drug Addict and I am a Criminal."
Is this book fiction or non-fiction? Mixed reviews have questioned whether this was real or not, but in either case, the book is riveting!

False or not, the book is very compelling.
I bought this book because of all the hype around it. I didn't really get past the first chapter.
Loved it.
Very engrossing read.
Now we know it is fictional but based on some truth.

Excellent book!
Really good book. I don't think the embellishments or whatever the scandal was about are that important...read it as if it's fiction, if that is something that bothers you - it's worth it.
I couldn't put this book down once I started it. It is the most gripping true story about addiction I've ever read.
Wow what a life. God Bless Him
Even though it is not a true story, I still got a lot out of it.
Despite the controversy about this book; it does capture the desparation of addiction quite well.
Oprah's book club.....very good
Even though the story turned out to be largely false, it is a good read.
WOW!! Even though its a fiction book its an excellent read. (Even Oprah said so)
I couldn't put it down - great read !
A great memoir. Good read.
An interesting read about a 23 year old man going through rehab for alcohol and crack.
even though he was making things up i guess-it was a great read....
I enjoyed this book a lot. I flew through. I thought it heart felt and captivating.
This is a great book. Really makes you think. Can't wait to read the next one.
Very painful read with so many suffering with alcohol and drug addiction. However, it was also very powerful and gave me a clearer look at what goes on inside the head of an addicted person.
This book is really amazing. Oprah got duped! She's a moron and James Frey knows how to write a beautiful book.
Although this may be viewed as a well written work, the revelation that this "memoir" was really a work of fiction made me completely unable to enjoy it. And, if you have ever had the misfortune to know and love someone with addiction problems, then you know that they would never, in a hundred years, be able to recall events from their drinking and drugging days with such clarity and specificity. The trick that Frey (apparently) tried to play on the literary community has tainted his chances of ever being taken seriously again. Which is a shame, because it's not a poorly written book.
Really impressive. Read "My Friend Leonard" as soon as I was finished.
I enjoyed this dark journey. Regardless of the Oprah outcome, I believe James Frey gave us a lot to think about in this book. Don't miss an opportunity to learn something about addiction or the addicted because Oprah felt betrayed. This is a great read.
Great read, sad, horrifying and amazingly true. My 21 year old daughter gave this to me to read, she LOVED it. I had a hard time getting through a few moments but was satisfied with how it ended.
good un'
I wasn't that impressed with this book. I don't know why Oprah was so fascinated with it.
I couldn't bring myself to finish the book. The actual story was okay, but the writing style was horrendous. Commas and quotation marks would have made this MUCH easier to read!
Growing up my father was an alcoholic and a drug addict. So books that get into the mind of an addict entice me. This book was OK not as good as all the hype. Dont get me wrong it did help you understand what an addict is going through during detox but there was some spots that dragged on a bit and had me saying yeah right.
If there is an addict in your family or you know one--this book is a wonderful read. If not, you aren't going to get as much out of this book, but it is so full of emotion that it is well worth the time either way. Well written and a page turner. I loved it. That being said, after i read this i found out that the author made some of this up or streatched the truth or changed the facts. I was quite dissappointed to say the least to be lied to in this way. I will still say i loved the read, but would of liked to of been told the whole truth and nothing but the truth when it is promised.
I thought this book was very entertaining! But then I like books that are about drug addictions, etc. Reminded me a little of Bret Easton Ellis.
Awesome!

There has been a lot of controversy, it seems, to the truthfulness of this book. Regardless of this, it is a raw, real account of what drug and alcohol rehab is like. I've read this book several times over and is still a favorite that I will grab anytime. An adult book for sure, just due to the language and subject matter, but an excellent read!
I liked it. I read it knowing all the hype about it so looked at it as work of fiction. I enjoyed it.
This book is excellent, and disturbing in it's details. You really feel like you're there with him. I enjoyed the book. It seems real, but now as we know it is a biography/novel/fiction.
i read this book way after all of the hype had come and gone. i wanted to read it since i know so many people who are sober and who have gone through rehabs. i have to say that this book was totally overrated and so overdone. the process of getting sober and going through rehab is so not like this. its a great work of fiction, and a great story, but so not real. half of the stuff he goes through is just not possible.
Very gripping true storry about a young mans journey through 6 weeks in rehab. Very graphic.
after reading there was a lot of controversy, but it was a good read
Non fiction or fiction, it doesn't really matter, this is an amazing book!!!!
Boring story of drug rehab billed as non-fiction autobiography but most of the details are fabricated.
Very interesting.
I liked it until I read all the hype.
A ridiculously engaging story of overcoming addiction. I had absolutely no interest in the controversy surrounding the book because as far as I'm concerned a good story is a good story. No one can memorialize any aspect of their own lives without personal bias or twist. James' addiction is palpable, and my heart raced right along with his.
Still a good book even if some of it is not true. This copy includes foreword by author.
Modern story re: going thru rehab.
good book
This may be a good story, but I can't tell you for sure - it's so poorly written I can't get past the third page.
amazing. I got bored a couple of times, but I finished the whole thing =]
inspiring. If he can live through what he lived through, it makes me feel like I can face whatever's coming to me.
It was a great book, and I felt sad [because of the fate of some of the characters] yet strong at the end of it.

James Frey's controversial "memoir" - need I say more?
This is a must-read book. Utterly absorbing!
His style is that all people (except man, woman & friend) & places (plus some words relating to treatment) are capitalized, but it's inconsistent, which really slowed my eye.

James Frey's staggering recovery memoir from drug addiction.
Whether you decide to read this as a work of fiction or a work of nonfiction, it's amazingn story and definitely a worthwhile read!
Though I'm not an addict of any sort, this book came at an important time in my life and I'm very glad it did. It is gritty and at times hard to read. The flow-of-consciousness style perfectly matched the narrating character. It did seem hollow at times, but perhaps that was only a reflection of the story itself. Nothing I would read again, but something that will stay with me for sure.
I found this book to be a good work of fiction, but read it as an autobiography. I'm not sure if some of my regard for the book came from thinking it was an autobiography as I read it. How good was it? Entertaining while I read it, but I'm not sure it deserves a second read from me.
An interesting book. Not sure what all the contraversy was about. Whether James Frey experienced all, any or a portion of what he documented seemed irrelevant to me. I think the true attraction of the account was its openness. It's not a shy sharing of information, nor is it particularly shocking. But, it was a good-enough read, the characters held my interest and the antagonist/protagonist (yes, they seem to be one in the same) revealed himself to an appropriate degree without seeming terribly self-serving. Definitely worth reading for yourself to form an educated opinion about its merits. There are also a few devices used (capitalization of certain words) which was intriguing...I couldn't quite crack the code on that, but it added to my interest level.
It is a really rivoting book. Sad, depressing, achingly so.
This isn't even a very good fake...I'm amazed that so many people were sucked in by Frey's farce.
The only reason to read this book is because you're curious about the controversy surrounding it.

Well. I guess I'll start by saying James Frey is a poor writer. If thats what you want to call it. He has no hold of the english language. He says the same things over and over again. Word for word and it gets annoying. Then his ego is huge. He thinks he is some tough guy. "I could have killed him." Egocentric stupidity. The books is twice as long as it should be. Why? CAUSE HE SAYS THE SAME THINGS OVER AND OVER AGAIN. Did I already say that? HA
The ending sucked. At first I liked its simplicity in writing. Short sentences. But it gets old. His tough guy no nonsense attitude gets old. He seems more like bragging about how tough he is. Which is bullshit. Also, he would have gotten thrown out of the treatment center real fast. The first night he says he fell over in a corner and just slept there, drooling on the hard floor all night. BULLSHIT.
Also almost the whole book is set in a treatment facility and that gets old too. Same conversations, and same situations page after painful page. Save your credits. There are other addiction books out there, with actual great writing.

I doubt you would read it if you knew most of it was fiction. The key issues - his arrests and deaths of those he loves are not true, so it really makes it a lot less meaningful.
Don't let anyone fool you. This book is poorly written, and many, many details are outright fabrications. Go to www.thesmokinggun.com and search the author's name for more information.
I really enjoyed this even though it turned out parts aren't true

Just a terrific read!
Just a terrific read!
Don't worry about what Oprah said- its still a great read!
I like this book Oprah was mad at him but maybe it was his recollection of his time there. He was on drugs. It was informative.
After "trying" to read this & not having a very good time, I saw the author on Oprah - after it was revealed that most of the book was made up. I don't have much respect for someone like this, especially when dealing with such a serious subject matter.
Personally, I hated his writing style, but friends tell me that (even though it isn't all true) it's a good book.

Great book. Despite teh controversy, still worth the read. seems an accurate depiction of addiction and recovery.
Never had the urge to read this book, although of course I've heard so many things about it! On many wishlists but not this ISBN-get it while it's here!
C'mon you guys! Be a 21st century thinker! Just because someone makes it up doesn't mean it isn't true!
This book has terrible language.
Couldn't get into it as well once the allegations started flying about how true it was!
really liked this book.

This is a terrifying novel about drug and alcohol addiction and rehabilitation. Anyone who has been or is in rehab for anything should be required to read this book. Anyone who has family members in rehab should read this book. Basically, everyone over the age of 14 should have to read this book.
It depicts the horrible tragedy of addiction and how Mr. Frey overcomes it. He knows that he has an addiction problem when he wakes up on a plane not knowing how he got there, where the plane is going, or how he got a broken nose and a hole through his cheek. When the plane lands, he gets off the plane and has his parents drive him to rehab, where he receives detoxification and learns how to control his drinking and drug addictions.
The book is his journey through rehab and how be becomes a better person. There is a lot of vulgarity and things that seem inappropriate but are a must for the story. The language is probably how everyone talked and the extreme drug situations are really what he went through.
There has been a lot of controversy over this book because there are parts that are "embellished" and altered. If you can see though all of that, then this book is truly amazing. I wouldn't suggest reading this book if you are under the age of fourteen due the language and theme of the book. You also might not want to read A MILLION LITTLE PIECES if you have a faint heart or easily get sick to your stomach because there are some extremely graphic scenes in the book. This is one I highly recommend, though.

"Forget the negative connotations connected to this book. None of that matters. This really is the best book I have ever read.
Frey's use of gut retching imagery and his unique writing style gets the reader totally immersed in this book, feeling as though they are really involved in the narrative, and Frey's character development really leaves the readers feeling as if they know these people personally.
I have never been more entertained and drawn into a book in my life. I do not care if a few details are fabricated or if the entire book is a lie, this is the best piece of modern literature out there."

A look into a chemical dependency center for addicts. Based in Minnesota.
Intense, unpredictable, and instantly engaging, A Million Little Pieces is a story of drug and alcohol abuse and rehabilitation as it has never been told before. Recounted in visceral, kinetic prose, and crafted with a forthrightness that rejects piety, cynicism, and self-pity, it brings us face-to-face with a provocative new understanding of the nature of addiction and the meaning of recovery.
By the time he entered a drug and alcohol treatment facility, James Frey had taken his addictions to near-deadly extremes. He had so thoroughly ravaged his body that the facilityís doctors were shocked he was still alive. The ensuing torments of detoxification and withdrawal, and the never-ending urge to use chemicals, are captured with a vitality and directness that recalls the seminal eye-opening power of William Burroughsís Junky.
But A Million Little Pieces refuses to fit any mold of drug literature. Inside the clinic, James is surrounded by patients as troubled as he is -- including a judge, a mobster, a one-time world-champion boxer, and a fragile former prostitute to whom he is not allowed to speak ó but their friendship and advice strikes James as stronger and truer than the clinicís droning dogma of How to Recover. James refuses to consider himself a victim of anything but his own bad decisions, and insists on accepting sole accountability for the person he has been and the person he may become--which runs directly counter to his counselors' recipes for recovery.
James has to fight to find his own way to confront the consequences of the life he has lived so far, and to determine what future, if any, he holds. It is this fight, told with the charismatic energy and power of One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, that is at the heart of A Million Little Pieces: the fight between one young manís will and the ever-tempting chemical trip to oblivion, the fight to survive on his own terms, for reasons close to his own heart.
A Million Little Pieces is an uncommonly genuine account of a life destroyed and a life reconstructed. It is also the introduction of a bold and talented literary voice.

The electrifying opening of James Frey's debut memoir, A Million Little Pieces, smash-cuts to the then 23-year-old author on a Chicago-bound plane "covered with a colorful mixture of spit, snot, urine, vomit and blood." Wanted by authorities in three states, without ID or any money, his face mangled and missing four front teeth, Frey is on a steep descent from a dark marathon of drug abuse. His stunned family checks him into a famed Minnesota drug treatment center where a doctor promises "he will be dead within a few days" if he starts to use again, and where Frey spends two agonizing months of detox confronting "The Fury" head on
Although it has now come to light that James Frey may have embellished some of the details of his memoir...it is still an excellent read. This book journeys through the author's time in rehab.
The back of the book says:
At the age of 23 James Frey woke up on a plane to find his four front teeth knocked out, his nose broken, and a hole through his cheek. He had no idea where the plane was headed nor any recollection of the past two weeks. An alcoholic for ten years and a crack addict for three, he checked into a treatment facility shortly after landing. There he was told he could either stop using or die before he reached age 24. Thsi si Frey's acclaimed account of his six weeks in rehab.
